So I overheard on the bus the other day two ladies talking about how many people think they have a allergic reaction to chocolate, however that it is actually all of the cockroaches that are in the chocolate they have a reaction to, not the chocolate itself. The other lady disagreed and said that quality-control in chocolate factories would be very high. The first lady said it's a well-known fact there are lots of bits of cockroaches in every chocolate bar.

Grossed me out, I love chocolate-please tell me it's not true!

well in the jars of the dried herb marjoram used in spag bol etc, it contains up to 5% insect, pizza toppings and juice like innocent and tropicana on average contain a small percentage of maggot bodies, so might be plausible. All extra protein though! Wonder what vegans eat...

There are various articles on the internet which support what the 2 ladies were saying
Allergy sufferers who react to chocolate might be shocked to learn their allergy could be linked to something other than the cocoa bean: an allergy to cockroaches.

An average of 8 insect parts are found in a chocolate bar and deemed safe, according to the FDA's guidelines.

"Most foods have natural contaminants in them, but there are levels which the FDA deems safe," said allergist Dr. Morton M. Teich. "Anything more than 60 insect pieces per 100 grams of chocolate is rejected by the FDA. "

    Absolute nonsense.
  • Looks like it may be true

Don't know how reputable this report is, as well as being American, but the important bits are:-
According to ABC News, the average chocolate bar contains eight insect parts. Anything less than 60 insect pieces per 100 grams of chocolate (two chocolate bars' worth) is deemed safe for consumption by the Food and Drug Administration.
Avoiding insects in your food is "almost impossible," Teich told ABC. "You probably would have to stop eating completely."

    Good source of protein :rotfl:

sob! Well I guess that will make it easier to give up chocolate for the January diet
  • Going by the theory quoted in #3.
My colleague is allergic to Chocolate. He doesn't eat anything with chocolate in it, even small quantities. He gets a rash or something like that. However he has a lots of tomato sauce (mixed in pasta or rice) and does not react to anything else. He eats a lot of shop bought food and fast food. If it was cockroaches he was allergic to, then it would have been apparent by now.:D

It is a nice deterrent though, since I love chocolates, the dark ones especially. Maybe they do have more cockroaches, hence the dark colour? :rotfl:

The links from the American equivalent of something like the daily mail.
  • My father once told me he had tasted a cockroach. He was assuming it was dates when a African (not sure which country) colleague gave him a delicacy. He was told what it was after eating the sweet.
So if these insects are eaten in some cultures, probably the FDA is going to approve a few misplaced legs or wings of insects. Feels a bit disgusting, but there seems to be food contamination in almost everything these days.
