Currys/knowhow engineer nearly burned my house down!

I wonder if the OP is going to compensate the Fire Service for wasting their time and maybe putting somebody's life at risk whilst they were tied up at her house dealing with this nonsense?
I hope they send her a bill.
And if you are worried about a gas leak you call the gas company not the Fire Service.0 -
I don't want money , I told them I never wanted the £80 back I want an apology and the guy that caused it to face some sort of consequences yea it's an easy mistake to make but he's supposed to do that job all day every day he shouldn't make mistakes like that irregaurdless of wether we were harmed or not i think I should be entitled to an apology after the stress they caused , and it may have been a small fire contained in the oven but diddnt stop the damage to my kitchen with I paid to have sorted like I said it's not about money it's about the apology and I don't feel that man should be working with gas X
It isn't your place to demand someone is sacked you are entitled to compensation but not vengeance.
You are certainly entitled to compensation for the inconvenience and lack of ability to use an oven as well as your installation costs back.
Installation fee plus the cost of a couple of meals out for the family somewhere moderate and fifty pounds for inconvenience is about what you can expect............You'll get nothing for "What if" in addition however. Compensation always has to be quantifiable.
As for your negligence in not calling the gas board out if you believed you might have a gas leak- that is criminal. Maybe you could consider buying a carbon monoxide alarm for the sake of your children's future safety if you still believe waiting before reporting it (to the wrong authority but at least you eventually did it) for two full days was appropriate.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

BoP now interrupts for the hard of reading
OP, purchased a new stove just prior to last Christmas. This was fitted by the shop's own engeineer, and was tested. The engineer, rather technician, made a rash fit, and left an item in the new oven. As this was a gas oven, flames licked around and black smoke poured from the item, so thick and acrid, it set off the Fire Alarm.
OP proceeded to open the door to kitchen, and was fortunate not to be overcome by the thick black acrid smoke, and, with gutso, and a damp flannel, put the fire out.
Two days later OP rang for Fireman Sam, as they were worried sick about a gas leak.
Compensation is being sought.
The children are thought to be safe.0 -
In all seriousness nobody should loose their job over this, mistakes do happen and leaving a plastic handle in the oven is a very minor mistake - yes there will have been smoke and perhaps (a small amount) of flames, but OP has for some reason (compo?) blown all of this out of the water and made it into something it isn't especially with claims like "nearly burned my house down"...
£80 refund from the company is very generous and I'm sure the engineer will get a talking to anyway... no need at all for him to loose his job.0 -
I new what caused it . I called the fire service out to check there was no gas leak and it was safe the just confirmed how it was started while they were here X
May I suggest that next time you are worried about a gas leak you call the gas emergency number rather than the fire brigade.
And do it straight away if you are concerned. Leaving it 48 hours if there had genuinely been a leak may not have been your wisest decision. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
If your kitchen has been damaged, then call your insurance company and they will deal with the claim. It's not rocket science. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

I'm sure the experience was frightening, but as others have said if you were that terrified you wouldn't have left it for a day or two before calling out the firefighters.
The installer made an error, no question. He undoubtedly realises this, as does the company. As for further consequences, what would you like to happen to him, lose his job? That wouldn't undo your experience and only have the poor guy suffer, and perhaps his family too. He's learned his lesson and thankfully nobody was hurt. Take a breath and let go. Your family are fine and an apology won't do you any favours.
Do you or your partner work? How would you feel if you or they were fired for a mistake that resulted in minor damage to property? Such a response is not proportionate to the 'crime'0 -
While i agree the op has over reacted and the inclusion of wont somebody think of the childeren seriously annoyed most readers (myself included). The critism of calling the firebrigade is unwarrented, especally this rediclous commentand maybe putting somebody's life at risk
The op stated they called the firebrigades none emergency number. All firebrigades in the country offer free fire provention inspections on request, some will even supply/fit smoke alarms for you for nothing. All this because they beleave its better (and proberlly cheaper) to send 1 man round in a car to provent a possiable fire (even if it takes 1000 inspections before they actually provent as fire) then to send 8 men in a truck to drag a smoaking corpse out of a house. No lives would have been put at risk due to the inspection, in the event of an emergency call requireing the officers attendance he would have left the inspection immediatly.0 -
I think that is very insulting. No need to call these workers monkeys, idiots, or chimps. They are certainly not brainless.0

No, what's insulting is calling them engineers......
As if they somehow compare to the likes of Isambard Brunel or Nikola Tesla.
I build high spec gaming PCs and used to run my own IT business, I now work in defence sector electronics, I think I'm more than qualified to determine their skill level.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”
