Just a quick update - I have now spoken to the detective and explained that I won't be accepting responsibility for anything. I was nervous about the call but she was really supportive and kind. She said I am in a very difficult position and she wouldn't really expect me to go forward with it and that no one thinks any less of me for not accepting responsibility. I would like to attend the funeral and she is going to let me know when it is.
I feel better knowing that even though a family member won't be dealing with this, it will all be dealt with and I can still pay my respects.
Thank you all again, I do really appreciate you taking the time to comment and assist.

Just to say that your decision was absolutely correct in my view - in similar circumstances, my F-I-L died last year. The only daughter who had been in touch with him at all in the last 20 years, was named as executor/beneficiary but she refused to have anything to do with the matter so another sister who lives many miles away, took over -she had an extremely stressful time as everyone immediately handed ALL responsibilities over to her - funeral arrangements and costs, clearing his Council flat ,disposing of his undriveable old car etc etc . Short term, it definitely affected her health adversely -and she wasn't even named in the will!:(0

glad to hear this, I had been going to post that you could still go to the funeral without taking on the other takss but can see you know that.
And if he deid intestate and it turns out that there is anything left after the costs of the funeral etc you would, as his child, be entitled to inherit - you don't lose that right though not taking on the administration of the estate, lathough of course you could chose to refuse any inheritance if there is anything, if you wished. All posts are my personal opinion, not formal advice Always get proper, professional advice (particularly about anything legal!)0 -
