Service Confusion

Excellent. Glad you got sorted. Shame the previous servicing doesn't seem to have been performed with the diligence one might hope for. One reason why I do all the work on my vehicles myself, at least I know it's been done properly.I thought I would resurrect this thread to give an update to how the MOT and service went at an independent garage. Just in case anyone is interested although nobody probably is particularly interested.
The mechanic said that my car doesn't look as though it has ever had a major service and going by the service book and the condition of the filters he is most likely correct. My head was firmly up my backside when I purchased this vehicle.
The oil filter, air filter, pollen filter and fuel filters have all be replaced. The front break pads were replaced (but I thought they would be and they checked before going ahead with it), the rear break were cleaned and greased, and a lightbulb was replaced. I noticed that one of my tyres was losing pressure, not much but enough, so that tyre was resealed. All in all I am happy with the service carried out.
The service and MOT came to the princely sum of £520.11 which is about 2/3 what the dealership were wanting to charge and I have more confidence in the work that has been done.
Thanks for your help BeenThroughItAll. :beer:0 -
An independent L-R specialist, or a general garage?I thought I would resurrect this thread to give an update to how the MOT and service went at an independent garage.
Both have the capability to do a good job, and it sounds as if they have, but on something as complex as a D4, you might like to see if you can find a specialist. There are some jobs that are VERY scary on 'em... The cambelt change requires the body to be lifted off the chassis - but that's a job that's more daunting than actually difficult.

It was an independent garage that a couple of people with D3s recommended. I'll keep that in mind though.0

It seems extraordinarily expensive to me. I've just had my old Jag. XJ8 serviced by the Jag. Agents. They collect and return (50 mile round trip), minor service to manufacturer's spec, carry out MOT. All for £325 including £96 worth of very fancy oil. Agreed that the car doesn't have the complexities of 4WD. The previous year they changed the brake fluid at my request so the total bill was £373.0

Jaguar also do special prices for older cars, older than 4yrs anyway.0 -

A mate that lives just outside Peterhead has mentioned that things vehicle related seem to have a premium attached around Aberdeen.
Personally I would fit the service round a trip to somewhere with cheaper servicing rates.
Though I suspect Land Rover servicing may be more expensive all over Scotland.
I saved a decent bit just by driving to Chelmsford are they than use a Jag dealer in Brentwood, I doubt you would save much going to Dundee, but maybe if you had a short holiday in Newcastle or Sheffield?
Something to consider for next time.0 -
Those well known holiday hotspots of Newcastle and Sheffield.

I could travel to North England but I would be doing it just for the sake of it. The cost in diesel plus the lost holidays and possibly the cost of accommodation wouldn't make it worthwhile to me. I'd rather pay the Aberdeen premium and save my annual leave. I'm happy I went somewhere recommended by other Disco owners that I know.
I have traveled down to Derby to buy a car before because even with the cost of the flight to Birmingham and the train to Derby it was still worthwhile. I'm guessing that the slump in oil price is having a known on affect to car sales because I managed to negotiate a decent discount on my Discovery when I bought it last February otherwise I would have traveled further afield.0 -
Newcastle is nicer than many think. Sheffield was just a thought as I suspect prices would be sensible! Lol.
If you ever end up down south the consider Lookers in Chelmsford.
They undercut London Jag dealers by nearly £300 on a full service with Cambelt and that was with a new boost control solenoid fitted aswell.
Your Disco will have issues with that, they often sieze. Accessed through the wheel arch in the Disco 4 I believe.
Hopefully your engine is not one of those that has the incorrectly made inlet manifold, though there is a TSB about it.
JLR are aware and it affects late 2011 and 2012 models. It is a pricey job aswell, think £2500/3000.0 -
That's interesting to hear- I've sometimes wondered whether that was the case. As the car looks extremely good both in condition and styling I wonder if they see it as a good advert for the marque and like to encourage my careful ownership. I'm thinking of giving it the clay bar treatment to see just how good I can get it looking. Until now, for 14 years, it's been a shampoo every month or two plus a polish maybe once a year.Jaguar also do special prices for older cars, older than 4yrs anyway.0
