Service Confusion

Off the top of my head, more than 48,000 but less than 49,000. It had 44,445 miles on the clock at it's last MOT.
Righto then. Service schedule says it's due a 4yr/60K service then, which includes the items I mentioned above. Quite a bit more than just a quick oil and filter job and a technician peering at it for half an hour as per the 'dealership service'.0 -
Thank you so much BeenThroughItAll you have been very helpful.
The dealer service includes a lot of things I already do myself anyway. Now I just need to decide whether to take the 3 year service plan or go to the independent garage. I suppose with the 3 year plan then it's easy to budget for as the independent garage couldn't give me any indication as to what the cost might be for them to carry out a manufacturer's service.0 -
You were quite right about the service intervals. The service book says 1 year/16,000 miles and not 1 year/20,000. It also talks about A and B services but doesn't go on to explain what they are so I'm off to dig out the owner's manual.0

The plot thickens (I know people have probably given up reading this thread but I'm home alone this evening so I either type it out or start talking to myself). The owners manual doesn't explain what type A and B services are but from what I can gather A services are minor and B services are major so the dealership's manufacturer's 3 years serving (major, minor, major) at £739 was starting to look decent after comparing prices from other Land Rover approved garages across the UK.
However, when I went to sign up for this service plan they kept saying 2 years and I pointed out their website says 3 years on several pages but after some checking that's a mistake apparently. £739 for 2 years of serving is looking less attractive now although they are trying to convince me that it's still great value for money. I'm going to contact the independent garage to see what their service includes so I can compare apples with apples. The next nearest Land Rover dealership/approved garage to me is almost 100 miles away in deepest darkest Elgin.0 -
The same 3.0d engine when fitted to the XJ has 16000 service intervals.
(Edit I see you clarified that in a later post)
If yours is a 2012 it won't be long till your inlet manifold cracks.
There is a TSB about it.
Cambelt interval is 112k on that engine (in an XJ so can't see it being much different in a Disco)
112k is the front belt (proper cambelt)
I believe the rear cambelt (diesel pump belt) is 150k, on the 3.0d the rear belt is timed so a bit more complicated than the rear belt I the 2.7d which you could happily leave till it snapped as it wasn't timed up apparently.
The rear belt is an body off job though an good independant can do it without taking the body off.
The B Service includes a fuel filter if I remember correctly.
Air filter change interval is overly long.
My Jag did a lot of miles and I bought it at just over a year old, the air filter was black and starting to be sucked into the inlet tract due to lack of flow.
I had several other services all done at Main Dealers and marked my air filters and they never changed it again.
I used to do extra oil changes anyway as well as my own air filter and fuel filter changes.
But a lot of my miles were in town.0 -
Thanks. I think I've decided against the dealership doing the service as their prices as extortionate. Even compared with other Land Rover approved garages they are expensive.
A major service is £713.15 and next year's interim service would be £561.79 which is why they think their 2 year service plan for £739 looks good value for money.
I'll ask some independent garages for quotes or at least ballpark figures today. Halfords (only tried them because I could get a quote online) are charging £280 for a major service and £219 for the interim service.0 -

PLEASE DON'T GO TO HALFORDS.
If you can't find a local, trustworthy independent, if Halfords, Kwik Fit, Mr. Clutch (did they go bust?), National Tyres (or any of the other fast-fit chain places) are NOT a replacement.
If the service plan is comprehensive, it appears excellent value - but check it covers everything and doesn't exclude items; many do.
Personally, at that age and mileage, I'd be asking a decent independent local garage (ask friends/family/colleagues/local taxi drivers where they take their cars) to service the car, using the manufacturer's service schedule as their guide.0 -
No, I'm not going to Halfords or Kwik Fit or any of that ilk. I never have and never will. I was just using it as a bench mark for the dealership's pricing which seemed very high to me.
I was planning to use an independent garage that many of my colleagues have recommended because the dealer's prices seem really high to me and because the dealer has cheesed me off about something else before. Do you think £739 for 2 years servicing is good value for money then? I'm just really wary of being ripped off by using a dealer's garage.0 -
Also consider price checking Land Rover dealer a little further from home.
I saved £400 on my cambelt service doing that.
And that was only going to Chelmsford instead of Brentwood or Woodford.
I also found that going to a Land Rover/Jaguar dealer in Chelmsford made the cost only slightly more than Les Pauls in North London who are a Jaguar specialist.
When your inlet manifold cracks, which most 2011/2012 3.0D do due to a production fault, if you have full JLR History then a good will repair is very possible even out of warranty, the manifold isn't expensive at under £200 if I remember correctly, but it is a two day job so you will get little hangs out of £2000 or so.
I compared the sums and stuck with Jaguar.
Though the London Main Dealer rates for services were cheaper than you have been quoted, though obviously your Disco is much more complicated mechanically.
Engine and gearbox etc is all the same other than a few internal mods to the engine for off roading apparently, don't know what they are though.
With a complicated and expensive car like a Disco 4 there is always the consideration about when you get around to sell.
Some people might view a vehicle with partial main dealer history as less desirable than one with independant stamps in the book. Quite possibly not a really justifiable position to take perhaps. But certainly a consideration.
If you bought your one used would you have preferred full JLR History?0 -
There are 3 other Land Rover dealers about 90 miles from me so I might give them a phone at lunch time.0
