Service Confusion

There are 3 other Land Rover dealers about 90 miles from me so I might give them a phone at lunch time.

Try some independent dealers nearby. Is there a particular reason why you want to spend main dealer money on a four year old car which is presumably out of warranty?

No, I'm not going to Halfords or Kwik Fit or any of that ilk. I never have and never will. I was just using it as a bench mark for the dealership's pricing which seemed very high to me.

    Thank goodness for that!

I was planning to use an independent garage that many of my colleagues have recommended because the dealer's prices seem really high to me and because the dealer has cheesed me off about something else before. Do you think £739 for 2 years servicing is good value for money then? I'm just really wary of being ripped off by using a dealer's garage.

£739 doesn't sound bad, if it is comprehensive enough to cover everything needed in a standard service schedule. Many of these servicing plans won't cover things like pollen filters, however, or brake fluid changes, or coolant changes - so you need to check that.

If it does, ~£369 a year for main dealer servicing on a Disco sounds 'OK' - but I'm only saying that in comparison to the prices you've quoted for the services it'll need in the next two years. Personally, to me £369 for a service sounds bloody extortionate, but I would be servicing the car myself if it were mine; or if I couldn't for any unknown reason, I'd take it to my trusted independent garage, who I know would do a decent job and not stiff me on the price.

£739 does sound ok when compared with the individual service prices but I think the individual service prices are ridiculous. I know maintaining a Disco isn't cheap but there comes a point when the dealer is just taking the !!!!. I thought from your precious post that £739 was just good value for money, not just good value for money compared with the individual prices.

I've booked my car into the independent garage most my colleagues use and recommended, for a service and MOT in a couple of weeks.

Apologies if I didn't make myself clear on that - I originally inferred from your post that you wanted to remain within the main dealer network, and based on the prices you quoted, the service plan does appear to represent good value. Compared to what's available within the wider market, however; maybe not so much!

I was only considering going to the main dealer when they were offering 3 years serving for £739 as that seemed ok to me but when they said their website was wrong (it's still wrong) and it was £739 for a 2 years then the original plan of an independent garage seemed the better option. The more MSE option. :money:

Almost always will, when compared to the chrome-and-glass palace option.

I thought I would resurrect this thread to give an update to how the MOT and service went at an independent garage. Just in case anyone is interested although nobody probably is particularly interested.

The mechanic said that my car doesn't look as though it has ever had a major service and going by the service book and the condition of the filters he is most likely correct. My head was firmly up my backside when I purchased this vehicle.

The oil filter, air filter, pollen filter and fuel filters have all be replaced. The front break pads were replaced (but I thought they would be and they checked before going ahead with it), the rear break were cleaned and greased, and a lightbulb was replaced. I noticed that one of my tyres was losing pressure, not much but enough, so that tyre was resealed. All in all I am happy with the service carried out.

The service and MOT came to the princely sum of £520.11 which is about 2/3 what the dealership were wanting to charge and I have more confidence in the work that has been done.

Thanks for your help BeenThroughItAll.

Did you actually get given the old parts for inspection?

Have you serviced the car previous to this since purchase?

This was my first service since I have owned the vehicle. I knew before I took it there that the tyre might need resealed or even replaced altogether and I was fairly confident the front break pads were on their last legs too.

I'm certain the filters needed replacing as going by the service book it doesn't look as though any of them had ever been replaced.

In all honesty I should have paid more attention when I bought the car.

The only thing I would suggest is remember that it is not unusual for a garage to slag the previous work done to a vehicle when they first touch it.

If you went to a different garage next year the same thing may even be said.

    It isn't uncommon.

Though I did catch out a Jaguar Main Dealer not changing the air filter in my Jaguar.
