John Lewis Bogus price match ?

  • Again John Lewis fail in their big sales pitch. I visited the Reading store to look at a fridge freezer that I had seen elsewhere. I was talked in to getting partner card and buying it with that as there is six months free credit. Not a bad idea I thought. The model I wanted to buy was not on display and not in stock. It was also £300/- more expensive. I was assured I would be able to get this back on the price match promise. Three weeks after the unit has been delivered, John Lewis still refuse to believe that RDO of Reigate have the exact same Fisher & Paykel fridge freezer in stock, on display and as I said 300 pounds cheaper. John Lewis tell me that this company is only a showroom! Yet if I choose to collect the item myself I even get a further 10 pounds off their price.
Five times I have tried to sort this out with John Lewis and the best customer service I received was a short message left on my answer service. - never knowingly undersold - never heard so much rubbish and now I am 300 pounds out of pocket!!!! Thanks!

Unfortunately in this case JL are correct:
What we mean by 'High Street competitor'

High street competitors trade on the same basis as us, with premises on a high street or comparable shopping destination freely open to the public in the UK mainland. They should carry a reasonable range of goods in stock for you to buy and take away, with clearly displayed prices. Their websites need to trade under the same brand and on the same basis as their high street shops.

Outlets which trade on a different basis to us, such as those that operate only on the internet or through mail-order, showrooms attached to internet-only companies, collection points, auction sites, factory outlets, membership clubs, duty-free shops, market stalls or home shopping channels, are not deemed equivalent high street competitors. We also don't match competitors who are in administration or closing down.

RDO are clear that the "store" is actually a showroom, presumably they have their reasons for doing so.

In future get the price match agreed before delivery, so you can cancel if need be. Also, and most important, read the conditions!

Can you order in-store at RDO? If so, it's clearly not a "showrooms attached to internet-only companies".
