    Hi

I mentioned last week I've had a massive bill due to my storage heater, and my energy plan being standard rate. I was advised by SSE to push for a free energy 7 meter to be installed so I can go on the plan.

However, despite SSE saying they'll do this for free, he isn't keen. He says the meter is suitable for the storage heater, and that all other flats are the same.

The thing is it won't cost him, and I've noticed some other flats do have these meters (perhaps they didn't ask first). SSE have since said they'd replace the meter back if I leave too.

Why wouldn't he want it to happen? The storage heater switches in my flat seem to have a peak and off-peak switch, so won't work now to assist with the charging, so I'm not convinced by his reasoning.

Is there any guidance on how I can find out when this timer comes on? I don't really want to be poking about in the electricity box! This is the only one it seems.

Who is best for me to be with for energy if I can't have an E7? I liked SSE's customer support but...

Ignore the LA as they don't pay your bill and arrange yourself for your supplier to fit an E7 meter for free.

Storage heaters are designed to use E7, there is no better tariff - end of.

The timeswitch instructions can be found here but don't use the storage heater until your meter and tariff has been changed to E7.

Would a halogen heater therefore be economical?
  • I am talking about the electric meter timerswitch which changes the day to night rate. They vary. With a digital meter you will have to check when the low rate becomes active. This can show by, a blinking cursor, the reading having a mark or also blinking . Some also scroll through on a constant loop with the active read making itself known .Ampy meters with a button will default to show the active reading .Sometimes the only way is to see which reading is day and night is to check which read advances in the day or night. Older meters are a doddle with two reads, low and norm with a circular 24 hr timer.

Okay this is confusing me. The timer I mentioned has nothing to do with E7 right? We all agree I'm on a standard meter, yes? I think I'm going to give up on the storage heater, I wish I'd not mentioned the E7 to the landlord. It's all a headache.

Your post adds absolutely nothing useful to this thread, only confusion - the OP does not have E7.

    Get an E7 meter fitted.
Find your E7 times from here https://customerservices.npower.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/179/~/what-are-the-economy-7-peak-and-off-peak-periods%3F or contact your supplier for details.
Move to cheapest tariff for you.
Set timer in fusebox according to link posted by cameltoe.
Check to see when water heater comes on - maybe fit a timer.
    Don't tell your LL/agent.
    Job done.

You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink.

How many more qualified opinions do you need?

    Another pointless thread!

Sorry you feel that way but I didn't expect to be refused three times when I created it. As I say, I wish I hadn't mentioned it to him, as the advice you have given is helpful but still won't help me make it happen.

    Just do it.

The letting agent lets the property but doesn't live in and have pay the bills!

Storage heaters need E7 as your supplier has informed you.

    What is your problem!

Let's look at it a different way. The EPC says that I should only pay around £270 for heating over 3 years. Factor in lighting and hot water overall £747 over 3 years working out £249 a year. Could I argue this with my letting agent that I'm paying far more?
