I am confused about how the withdrawal negotiations will go.
A number of posters have suggested that during those leaving negotiations we will be striking a deal such as EU light etc etc.
Now I know we are we are but are some posters making assumptions or perhaps they understand this better than I do.

    I understand it thus.
First we negotiate our leaving. I am assuming this will cover what leases on buildings we will keep, who will pay the severance pay of British officials working for the EU and to what laws we will keep on our books.
When all is agreed we sign a leaving contract.
    THEN
Second after that signing we begin to negotiate our new relationship with the EU.

So, help needed on what we will negotiate about to leave and do I understand this is a two stage process.
    Thanks.
There will be no Brexit dividend for Britain.

no rational person would choose to do that.
obviously one would do both in parallel

Will the word of the EU trade commissioner do?

Thus looks very clear to me

do you always believe every politician?
or do you think EU politicians are different from the UK?

do you really think that ALL EU exports to the UK will stop in 2 years time and then negotiation will start?

There is obviously no precedent, but that understanding comes from the wording of article 50 I believe:

"A Member State which decides to withdraw shall notify the European Council of its intention. In the light of the guidelines provided by the European Council, the Union shall negotiate and conclude an agreement with that State, setting out the arrangements for its withdrawal, taking account of the framework for its future relationship with the Union. "

It implies that there are two agreements: (1) a withdrawal agreement; (2) an agreement for the relationship between the departing state and the EU. Although note that it contemplates that the withdrawal agreement will take account of its "future relationship" with the EU.

David Davis appointed Secretary of State for Brexit.

To give an idea of where we may be heading, these were his thoughts just 6 weeks ago.

    ......................

I was surprised that my understanding of the two stage process was questioned as I had thought that was a given.
There have been numerous statements to that effect coming out of Brussels both before the referendum and afterwards. I thought that my post would get comments to the effect that this is just posturing but to not be aware that the "two stage process" was the first position put on the table surprises me. But no matter.
My original question is what things do we negotiate about for the leaving contract.
A number of posters appeared to have knowledge of the process and I was hoping to hear from them.
There will be no Brexit dividend for Britain.
