What can i do if the hospital does not offer concessions for those that work out of hours - when the principles outlined on a gov.uk website state that those that cannot get to work via public transport should get a concession?

Could you post a link to the part of the gov site you are referring to?

    Was it this one?

Seems to say "should" rather than "must".

    Which Hospital is it?

The document is headed "guidance" so it is not a laid down rule that your employer must follow.

All you can do is campaign, preferably with the help of a union, for them to change their rules.

Generally, in the absence of any contractual agreements, how you get to work, what parking if any is available etc is entirely your problem.

Obviously if the difficulty of getting to work and / or parking makes it difficult to recruit suitable staff it will become a higher priority for the employer to address the issue.

When you say out of hours, do you mean at times (either side) there is no public transport?

It might be worth looking at the Terms of Service in the NHS employers website (look under antisocial / out of hours) or talking to your local union rep. This will not have been the first time they will have been asked, and if they have enough demand for members of staff they may be willing to negotiate for you locally.

If the junior doctors don't see the changes to the proposed contract revised, I can guarantee that you won't be the only one in this position!

Speak to your union - you can't be the only worker who is concerned about parking charges at your site.

Are you solely employed during anti-social hours?

Or are you 'sometimes' working the night shift?

Do 3 shifts. Two of those shifts finish when there is no bus service

It'll be (likely) a pass barrier. Hospitals have various colour levels - On call A&E staff for example often have high priority - for obvious reasons.

At my local hospital (1 of 3 in the trust) there is a 2 patients car parks, a large staff car park and numerous smaller staff car parks scattered around the site.

however the typical problem is when staff from another site travel down/up - it's additional surge which cant be coped with.

Thankfully plans for a multi storey are in place for the next 18-24 months. (though European style elevator garages would've been better in my opinion)

As for the concession - to be honest if it's not in your contract (which I suspect it's not), you may struggle - I'd raise this with the corporate divisional manager?
