Abbey 5% cash back card

I suspect that all new cards are underwritten by santander, whereas there may be some arrangement whereby all old abbey cards underwritten by mbna remain with mbna, or at the very least there is some kind of phased handover.
Does anyone have any other anecdotal evidence of what is happening?0 -
I've just seen the details of this in the weekly e-mail. With all due respect, Martin, I wouldn't call it the new top card. OK, 5% is more than the Cap 1 card's 4%, but look at the limitations - £50 maximum, food/supermarkets only and not M&S. I am in no rush to "tart" from my Cap 1 card to this one.The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0

I disagree. The 5% is an excellent cashback percentage. I have just applied and will run it alongside my Cap1 card. I anticipate obtaining the full £50 cashback over the next few months.
Most people, even on a modest budget, should be easily able to make the £50 cashback. Plus, I believe that the card will be easier to obtain for many people over the Cap1 card, which is not availalbe to anyone with less than perfect credit histories.
It is true that the M&S thing is a bit of a bummer, however, on a personal level, I never shop there - as it's too dear!.
It's a shame the budget supermarkets also don't seem to be included.
:beer:Whilst my posts do not constitute financial advice, I am always, without fail, 100% right!0 -

Points taken. I suppose that, when my Cap 1 card drops from 4% to 1% (and its only got a month to go at 4%), it should do the business until you either hit the £50 ceiling or something better comes along.
So, I could use it for my shopping at ASDA (5%), my ASDA card for my petrol at ASDA (2p/litre off 91.9p/litre = 2.18%), and still use the Cap 1 card for everything else, inc. M&S (1%), as I've got to keep the account open until January to get the cashback. We're going to need a bigger wallet!
PS. Martin, ignore my previous post: I wasn't thinking outside of the box!The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0 -
DAMN just as i get my 4% Cap 1 card!!!0

I feel your pain.
However, the Cap 1 card is on all purchases at all retailers. If you transfer all of your spending onto it, you should be able to earn £50 in its first 3 months. When it drops to 1%, jump ship to the Abbey card - unless anyone else has launched anything better in the meantime, of course. How's that for advance planning? The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0 -
Hi - has anyone applied for the Abbey card online? I submitted an application earlier and it gave me a reference at the end and then just jumped to the homepage. Decision by post perhaps? I don't recall seeing anything to that effect but maybe all today's coffee has gone to my head...
Thanks!
PS. I also think it's a pretty good deal for food shopping. As someone said, it's good for Christmas - any cashback is going to be paying for my own Christmas present! Oops, did I say the dreaded C word...0 -
I applied on Monday, got the same reference then heard nothing since. Said the paperwork would be posted to be signed and returned.0

Yes - and thats what happened to me.
PS. According to MS Excel, its only 109 days to Christmas Day. :xmassmileThe acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0 -
A ha! You obviously have a better attention span than me for these things.
Where's that decaf...
Thanks!0
