It's their business, they can do what they like.

Technically speaking, if you are a member of the Co-Op, it is in fact your business, not theirs. The Co-Op is owned by its customers.:)

Should imagine the shop isn't particularly bothered if the very angry op shops there or not, it's not a charity.

Especially when the OP gives a fake reason for complaining (food waste), when they are not bothered about the food waste, but only in getting a bargain.

Yes, but 'getting a bargain', would be the whole point of MSE. This is a site devoted to money saving. The clue is in the name.:)

Obviously, but how much do you save if the bargains result in the demise of the retailer? Fewer shops, equals less competition, which generally leads to higher prices, oh, and fewer jobs . . .;)

And that would be absolutely fine if the OP was moaning about the retailer not marking prices down so they could get a bargain, but they were not. They were moaning about the food going to waste.

So, huge piles of edible food are now ending up in the bins every night as no one is buying the higher price reductions.

I'm absolutely disgusted at this, especially in light of Hugh's War On Waste campaign!

If food going to waste was their real concern, then the simple thing for them to have done to eliminate the problem would have been to buy the items that were slightly reduced, rather than leave them on the shelf to be thrown away.

After all, if they were going to eat the £1 item reduced to 10p and stop it going to waste, then they would have eaten the same item even if it had only been reduced to 90p.

i work in ASDA and they reduce the prices as the day goes on and at around 7pm they reduce it to most items 10p chilled / fruit & veg / bakery items and its a free for all and the same people are there all the time grabbing what they can without even looking at it and chucking it in the basket or trolley , then you go round the store later on and see a pack of reduced ham or a baguette just left on some random shelf , yes it attracts the wrong kind of people who just rely on cheap food

Unfortunately, human nature takes over. When people see something very cheap, they buy it whether they need it or not. So all that super-cheap food will probably still never be eaten. People will take it home, then decide not to eat it because they didn't want it in the first place, and eventually bin it anyway. The other issue is that some people will buy stuff, far more than they need, and eat it anyway, thus increasing the obesity epidemic. Just look at the BOGOF and multipacks - people buy more and consume more just because it appears to be cheaper.
This ^ if the shop has too many regular last minute scavengers they make a loss because these "customers" never buy the items at a normal profitable price (which is the reason the shop exists in the first place)

Human nature again. If people know that certain shops will always reduce their prices at certain times of the day, they'll adjust their shopping habits accordingly and purposely go just to buy cheap stuff rather than at the proper price. My OAP neighbour did this for years - she'd always go out to the local fruit and veg market late Saturday afternoon just as the stalls were about to pack up, and buy all her fruit and veg - she boasted about never buying any at normal prices. If everyone did that, the shops would cease to exist.
  • There are many daily blogs about people who only shop late in the day buying yellow sticker products.

Quite, and the fact I do the majority of my shopping there outside of my monthly trip to Aldi does not make me a "scavenging seagull" by wanting to grab a few bargains in the process.

And if I was store manager then if rather sell ALL my produce at reduced rate than see it end up in landfill.
