I used to find that my hair started to get very greasy and incredibly itchy between washes. I have always persevered with washing alternate days. After 1 1/2 days it would start to bother me.

I decided to try going 'no poo' for a while last year. I kept my hair scraped back in a bun most of the time, and went as long as I could only using water on it. I managed a couple of weeks before I couldn't take it anymore. Since then both the greasiness and itchiness haven't really made an appearance - almost a year later!

I wash my hair once a week but then I don't overload it with products, just a little heat protection spray before straightening it. I'd hate to have to wash it daily, such a hassle.

I also live in London and wash my hair every other day, the city makes no difference to my hair to be honest, I lived for the last 7 years in Wales, in a small town near the beach and my hair was still greasy.
I wish I could live without the need of washing it, the second day it is like I haven't washed it in weeks, it looks that greasy and yucky.
Dry shampoo makes no difference with my dark thick hair either, it just feels very rough and dry if you touch it. The only thing that controlled my hair and made it a bit drier was getting blonde highlights all over but I don't really want to do that, it is cost a bomb so I am stuck washing it every other day.

I wash mine everyday, like other parts of your body your scalp sweats, not a big fan of BO.
  • If your hair needs everyday washing, do it! Try some natural oils like coconut maybe.

I've washed my hair every day for about 50 years and it hasn't done my hair any harm. I have people saying how shiny it is.

I've got short hair now so it's easy to wash it in the shower every day but when I was younger it was almost to my waist and I still washed it every day.

I hate the feeling of unwashed hair. If I don't wash it for any reason (if I am ill) I just don't feel clean and my head itches like crazy.

My hairdresser says there is nothing wrong in washing your hair every day as long as you don't use a harsh shampoo.

You wash your face and body every day so why not your hair?

  • I think reading this thread it just goes to show that everyone has different experiences, and has found a way to deal with their hair!

I've got thick dark hair which i wear quite short - I wash it every other day but I do wet it and blow dry it everyday to style.

Previously, I used to wash my hair every day and I don't think it really feels any different nowadays.

So do the best for you!
  • Many people with oily hair believe that they must wash it daily, but that may not be true. In fact, it's better to let your hair rest every other day. Shampooing day after day can harm your hair more than it helps them. Following these suggestions will assist you going another day before washing your hair.
  • I wash mine every day and have done for years. I have short, thick, fine hair and when I wake up it's sticking out all over the place. It's easy for me to wash it when I'm in the shower.

The only times I don't wash my hair is if I'm at home all day and not going anywhere which is rare. I usually have to wet it down to stop it sticking up which takes ages, so it's often quicker to wash it but not dry it. My hair feels awful though if I don't wash it.

Is there anyone here who lives in a major city where there is a lot of pollution who has managed to go longer than 3 days or more without washing their hair?

    Does Manchester count? :D

i knew this girl who never had a hair drier

My hair only sees a hairdryer at the hairdressers, every 6-8 weeks. No heat or products during the intervening weeks.

It gets washed less often than weekly. I don't do a physical job so my head doesn't particularly sweat. It doesn't smell. It doesn't feel yucky. It's just hair.
