If he has not worked self-employed in the last year, cant he call them up and just avoid doing it this year??
From HMRC............Closing your Self Assessment account
If you used to send a tax return but you didn’t have any undeclared income in the last tax year, contact HMRC to close your Self Assessment account.

You must also tell HMRC if you’ve stopped being self-employed.

He has not actually stopped being self employed it's just a sort of hobby that sometimes he does earn from so he had to register as a business for it.

Just got to the bottom of it he has input the few pound interest we got on our new joint account we opened just before end of last year as the whole amount instead of half.

I didn't sit over him this year as thought it was easy. :o I best do next year with a whole years worth of interest to input.

He is now in a strop and won't change it for sake of couple quid.

But if he has not worked this last tax year, it would be easier for him to have just called up and informed them, and then if he worked next year, call them up and register for SA again.

Does it have to be in by January 31st

I do Ohs self assessment form and as soon as the p60 arrives I have to get the wretched form filled in and sent off. He only owes a tiny ammount so they just do a tax code adjustment - it's just a short version of the form.

I still have not quite got my head around what is happening with the tax changes next year but I am not thinking about it until we get a letter of some sort

We hoped he would only ever have to do a short assessment when he registered as self employed for the bit of extra work he occasionally does but they said he had to do full assessment. We are only talking less than £500 year earnings with some travel expenses too.

He has worked for his main employer though?

I guess I don't know it's done now anyway I'm not getting shouted at again for not saying something I did. :o

Yes they do, I will just have to remember what you said if he doesn't do any self employed this year. And can't see he will with only 2ish months to go he has been using his spare time on projects at home. :)

Mr TS decided to do his tax return that's why I shut up.

He hasn't done any self employed work last tax year so only had details from his P60 to enter and still ended up owing tax. :(

Oh I feel this pain :o I left things far too late with one thing and another and CANNOT find my UTR. Despite everything being online a request for my UTR takes 7 working days and arrives by snail mail. I think I'll be cutting it fine :o

He needed his UTR as couldn't remember his password, I'm sure he has always had it written down somewhere. :o. Thankfully he did have the letter with the UTR on he is known for throwing things away.

Surely with everything you have going on there would be some understanding? Hope it arrives quickly for you.

If you can find a printout of last years tax return, is it not on there? I lost mine a few years ago, also about this time, not sure what I did to get round it.
