Apart from all the carbohydrates which cause obesity and can cause feline diabetes and worsen tooth decay, in pet food vegetable derivatives are also another way of saying sugar/beet pulp. Looking at the ingredients its exactly the same as felix etc.

Well I did not know that. I thought that cos CoOp were an ethical place it would be safe. Suggestions for my little kitty cats? They eat dried food, (whiskers) during the day.
What wet food can they eat that's safe for them?

Thanks for the heads up btw :)

  • None of those. Grain free wet with a very high meat content here.
  • Another raw feeder here.

The brands that you have mentioned are not unsafe they're just not the best options available.

They may increase the risk of certain illnesses in some cats, but that doesn't mean they will in all cats or even the majority of cats.

Most cats are fed the widely available cat foods and live perfectly long and healthy lives, if your cat is susceptible to illness it might be an idea to try a more refined diet, but please don't think you're automatically harming your cat by feeding it off the shelf food.

I suppose it's comparable to living your life eating processed ready meals rather than freshly prepared foods. In the short term, or occasionally, it won't have much impact on health but long term it can cause severe health problems, disease and drastically shorten your life.

No different in animals. Cats which are fed unhealthy diets tend to die in their early teens, equivalent to a person dying in their 50s and 60s. Whereas healthy cats fed on an appropriate diet can quite comfortably live into their 20s. The only cat I had which never reached its 20th birthday was killed in a RTA.

And equally all my cats have lived to 19-20 years, illness free, fed on an off the shelf diet, who'd have thought?

My MIL on the other had has fed her cats on only the most pure foods, vaccinated them against everything, taken them to the vet at the slightest snuffle and hasn't had one live beyond 8 years.

My last cat died of old age at 19 fed on Felix! Current cat is fussy and mostly will eat Felix (sometimes Whiskers or own brand) but I regularly change the type ie gravy, jelly, good as it looks. I also feed her boiled fish, chicken and sardines. Never raw as that makes her breath smell!

Gourmet when they can get their paws on it but they usually have to settle for Whiskas and the occasional bit of chicken.

I bought a bulk amount of Felix but they have to be starving to give it the time of day so the dogs tend to end up with it as a treat stirred into their croquettes.

I have found the cosma multi packs on zoo plus to be the best price/quality (and I have tried a good few)
For dry, I have found Porta 21, also on zoo plus to be very good.
With the much higher quality than supermarket grade, the poop quantity has reduced by 75%
  • Considering that I had to take 3 days off work when my last furry baby died, I want my girlies to live as long as they can. They are 4 year old indoor cats that are in great health I think.

I'm a massive fan of zooplus so I'll have a look into the cosmo multi packs I think.
