is it true that BMW cars would not show any codes for such Clutch failures and I have to go by what mechanic says??
And on top of it-they will let me know whether DMF needs to be changed(another £400+labour) while they are replacing clutch!!!0 -
Why do you need a code to tell you the clutch is going? If it slips its going; if it doesn't it isn't. DMF will clatter at tickover and bang when you let the clutch up if it needs changing.0

Why would you need a mechanic to tell you your clutch is going?
Is the lack of power actually the clutch slipping?
Is the erratic idle you mention actually the DMF rattling?
The clutch would have to be slipping extremely badly to increase fuel usage by a significant amount.
Is there a way you can have the car given a once over by a friend or member of your family that is a bit more car savvy?0 -
I'm not convinced you know what an EGR valve is let alone the role it plays.
Come on, we all know they be witchcraft......
If the engine is over cooling due to a thermostat issue then the EGR could possibly not open enough or even at all.
Wether that would actually damage the EGR I don't know.
It could always seize up?
When I bought the 116D last summer I did some research on the problems with the 2.0D engine on the BMW forums and they discussed the thermostat problem a lot, but usually in the context of it causing Regen problems with the DPF.0 -

Great, I do not need to convince you or anyone else, just offering my limited knowledge of personal experiences with running a 2.0d E9* bmw that had similar low MPG figures. I changed both thermostats and coolant temperatures went from 65-75 to a solid 90 degrees and the MPG figures went up too.
Only way to know how warm your coolant temperatures are is to access the hidden menus.0
