I bought an Alba box 2 years ago from Tesco and although it works, it is pretty poor - slow channel selection response, occasional lock up, and poor signal channels cause it to go into permanent filcker mode only cured by a reboot.
So - have we moved on, or is this new offering not just cheap, but also that other word always associated with cheap - nasty......
The vast majority of cheap Freeview boxes come from the same place, or at least the software does. Its a Turkish company called Vestel. Buy a Goodmans, Bush, Alba, Wharfedale, Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury, Matsui, Techwood, Grundig... the list goes on, and they've come from Vestel.
A few years back they were cheap and nasty, however Vestel have improved the software quite a bit over the years and its now very fast to use and bug free. It handles digital teletext (BBCi, Teletext etc) better and faster than anything else i've seen. In parts its not as good as it could be, the 7 day EPG is a bit pants (not in the popular "Sky" format), but for the money its fine.
And for £10 its a steal!
In fact, if you buy a Philips box (like the one on the Tesco site at £35), they are now using Vestel software.
Finally, the box is also approved to carry the "Digital tick" logo, which means it meets all the requirements for the Digital Switchover http://www.digitallogo.co.uk/company_intro.php0 -

Having read about the techwood freeview box in my email and that it will be available in the 'extra' stores, I couldn't believe it when I asked at my local Burnham on Sea Tesco's and they had some.:T they were behind the customer services desk.:j I suspect that other stores ( sainsbury, asda morrison's etc)will be following suit very soon.0

I sold over half of my initial allocation today. Not sure if more will be available.
If you want one of these, think you had best be quick...Who or what was I before you came in to my life
I am not sure0 -
Anyone know if these are fully interactive (ie red button selections etc), thanks.0

Recently Aldi had some at about £18.99 which were behind the cashier. I suspect one of the reasons is that you have to complete a TV license declaration form !
BTW I couldn't get the Aldi one to work ... but maybe that is just me, so i returned it for a full refund.Do Tesco's operate a similar policy?

Aldi recently had an offer for £18.99 (I think). They were behind the cashier's desk. One of the reasons I suspect is that you have to fill in a tv license form. Needless to say I couldn't get it to work (it may have been me!)I returned it to them for a full refund. Do Tesco's operate the same policy?
