  • The Costco passport which is issued usually has some pretty good deals. I buy in bulk, have plenty room to store but happy to split things with friends if they don't have so much storage space.

The fresh beef etc is excellent, just buy zipl lock bags and freeze it in suitable amounts. The butchers will also cut/pack things to the size you wish and are happy to explain exactly what the source of their beef is (and it's fairly local in terms of the Glasgow store which is important to me).

Other then household goods the things which I like Costco for are
Christmas Decorations (indoor and outdoor) and wrapping paper
Christmas Cards - box of 27 hand crafted cards for around £10 (friends are raving about how fab they are)
Gift bags - Christmas or any other time of year (carry case with 20 odd gift bags mixed sizes for £10 or so). Just buy the Costco tissue paper and you are sorted.
The goods which change from time to time - only a certain amount of stock and then you may never see it again. I've bought numerous items - a super king size bedspread set (the kind you see in flash American houses), a stunning Lennox crystal vase, dinner service and so on.

I don't regard it as cheap per se, I think it's excellent value for what you get. The quality is great, most of the goods are imported for the US/Canadian market and lets face it they are much more demanding customers than us. I've also had people comment on many items I have in the house which came from Costco.

And lastly don't forget the cafeteria. Hot dog and trimmings and a massive diet soda for £1.20ish. I've often seen whole families eating at Costco as it represents such good value.

I agree that you need to know prices of things in general so you can compare, some things are cheaper in supermarkets for the same item, some costco things will be more expensive but better quality and others will be much cheaper!

We have a big family (6 children aged 13 down to almost 4) so we get through a lot of lunchbox drinks, loo roll, washing powder, toothpaste etc and costco really helps us out with those costs. We love the huuuuuuge gammons, I bought one a few weeks ago and got dp to chop it up into more manageable sizes for me, now bearing in mind there are 7 meateaters in my house we got six smaller joints out of the big one, and one was double the size of the rest as I wanted plenty of ham for lunchbox sandwiches, the price of the original gammon was £19! And it was the nicest one we've had. Also we love the big bags of ready peeled baby carrots, they last forever and get added to lunchboxes, roasts, casseroles... all for about £4

Oh nearly forgot, got my dad a bottle of Glenlivet whiskey for christmas - is approx £25 or more in Tesco was £15.89 plus vat in costco - in the nice presentation box too.
  • I'm a regular Costco shopper and my staple purchases include the toilet paper, laundry detergent, ziplock bags, chicken, mini cucumbers, lamb leg joints, tinned mackerel (15p per can cheaper than the supermarket), eggs (5 doz factory farmed for <£4 or 18 free range omega 3 enriched for £2.80), 1kg bags of nuts and soft drinks

We are a family of 6 with four teens's and lots of storage space which makes it ideal to use Costco and Makro, basically the larger the family the more it pays to join and you see that in the post's above.
Also shopping in bulk means we save time and money only shopping once a month and Tesco etc have a bulk buy policy.
going to Costco next week went to Makro this week.
    Makro
    Bold 70 wash (powder) £7.89
    J20 24xApple+Melon £8.49 (had other flavour's)
Triple Velvet 18 roll £8.49 BoGoF
Guinness 24x foreign strengh £23.56 (£1.52 a bottle in Asda)
If you live in london you should once a month make the effort to get down to smithfield meat market by 5-5:30 am and you could save a fortune on your Quality Meat.
Side of a Pig £21 (they will cut it for you if you are early (£1 tip), 19 big fat pork chops with kidney on some and a huge sunday joint ).
Turkey Crown 6kg £21 (fresh not frozen bird)
Top side Beef joint 7Kg Strung £23.
Prices go up and down but you will notice the difference in price and size of the meat portions to Tesco etc.
  • I LOVE COSTCO...:p

I miss Costco. When I lived in Watford they had the first British Costco there and shopped there all the time as it was on my way home from work.

I moved to Surrey and the nearest one is near Lakeside or Bluewater and I don't like driving there.

My son is still a member in Watford so he brings me my regular stuff, e.g. loo rolls, bin bags, meat, rubber gloves, washing powder, dishwasher tablets etc. and, as a treat, when I am up there, he takes me to Costco for a few hours.

Yes, I love Costco and have saved (and spent) a fortune there.
  • Not sure if anybody has mentioned this but their dog food is v good value. I buy one called Autakry (sp?) for my springer spaniel and it's less than £11 for 15kg and he thrives on it. I've searched it on the internet and it's over £20 anywhere else.

Thanks, will check that one out. It would certainly be easier for me.
