Just to give my personal experience in case it helps in any way. I now realise the problems associated with putting large items on ebay for collection only. However I started a few years when I inherited the house contents when my good friend died.

I put most of the items on ebay as collection only and asked for cash in the advert and maybe it was beginner's luck but no-one tried to pay by paypal and all realised they had to bring cash.

I have a few more large items I would like to advertise due to lack of space and I am more aware of possible pitfalls but will probably go ahead with them as cash on collection on ebay as they have greater exposure.

Just as a reminder really, no one can force a seller to sell- yes there are a few isolated court cases where buyers have won money when a seller has not gone ahead with a sale- but these were not for items costing a few hundred pounds.

Secondly, 99.9% of buyers collecting are absolutely fine, but it is not those ones we are warning against. I have actually sold more than one thing with paypal which was then collected, I knew what I was doing, I understood the risks but decided on the balance of probability I was safe- but that was my decision and not one I would force onto others.

Lastly, scammers often target inexperienced or new sellers and that makes me nervous when people start selling and don't understand the risks. Going back to point one about not being forced to sell- that is fine as long as the seller understands the costs of refusing to sell. It is all covered in the sticky thread- but it is worth noting that there is no mechanism for being guaranteed to walk away without fees and poor feedback from a collection only sale on ebay where seller refunds a paypal payment.
