I'll have a look and see if I can find anything about cash only in eBay's current help pages or T&C's.

Yeah, it states that I must accept PayPal.

I can offer payment on collection but I must accept PayPal, I'm now looking at the PayPal T&C's regarding collection.

I can't believe it's such a flawed system for such a big site.

Paypal state their service is not suitable for collection items, the rules about seller protection are on every payment email you get from them and on every transaction page in your account.

You are overthinking this. Ebay state that paypal must be offered on all items apart from those in certain categories like motor vehicles. They also state you cannot refuse payment by any method that you have given in your listing.

Add to that the fact that paypal will show as the default and if buyer decides, for any odd reason, to go through checkout they will get a big fat 'pay now' button that takes them automatically to paypal to pay.

By all means do more research if you don't believe us, after all ebay don't police their auctions so any 'incorrect ' wording is unlikely to be picked up . However, I can o ly urge you again to read the sticky thread and decide what you will do if buyer pays by paypal and then refuses to collect and bring cash when you cancel their payment? no one can force you to sell, but be aware of the costs associated with refusing to sell to a winning bidder.

    Thanks.

The reason I'm over thinking it is because the way I am understanding it, it just seems so incredibly flawed at every stage when it comes to collection items, I hate having PayPal shoved down my throat by eBay, I only made the account (reluctantly) for this and I have pretty much zero protection. It looks so, so easy to be scammed.

I'm just trying to avoid hassle to be honest, it's been a stressful 2015 and this year has started pretty stressful too.

I may just remove it for peace of mind and see if I can sell it somewhere else for a fixed price and reduce it week on week until it goes.

I've technically worded it incorrectly then, but if they take it down, I'll reword it and repost it - or I'll just put it somewhere else because the more I'm learning about how eBay works, the more I'm glad I avoided it all this time, and may just rely on it as a last resort if I struggle to get rid by the end of the month.

Problem is I've got more items which are too big to send out by courier and would be collection only, the Sofa is the thing we need to get rid of as priority so listed quickly, we can go down alternative routes with the other stuff if eBay are being stubborn about it. Might as well test the water anyway.

I'll have a look and see if I can find anything about cash only in eBay's current help pages or T&C's.

Ebay isn't so bad, it's just knowing how it works.

A few posters on here (soolin certainly being one) know far more about ebay than most of the ebay staff! lol.

However, you don't need to know every little thing because chances are you won't be affected by half of it. All you need to know is the key things for collection items which were outlined at the start of the thread (so cash only, don't state only, no courier set up by buyer etc) and which are also mentioned in the sticky thread

You have to offer Paypal, you don't have to accept it (regardless of how ebay/Papyal may word it).

Paypal has to be a payment option on the listing (the offer). If someone pays by Paypal you can refund and message asking for cash on collection (therefore not accepting it).

Paypal does give you protection when posting an item providing you follow their rules.

It does not offer protection for collection items, but you don't have to accept payment that way.

Best thing is not to worry about Paypal being there or the seller protection stuff. It has to be on the listing, but nothing more. You can ask for cash on collection, you can refund if anyone pays by Paypal and then none of the Paypal stuff applies. You can arrange collection with the buyer and get paid cash in hand, sold as seen, no refunds. Simple.

I'm not trying to be argumentative, it's just the set of circumstances I'm under at the moment (financially) means I can't afford to lose out by doing it incorrectly, or losing out by leaving myself exposed, if you see what I'm getting at. Better safe than sorry?

I'm just trying to get my head around it, logically, to me, it just seems the wrong way round and I just like to know and properly understand how things work, it's always been in my nature.

Sorry if it seems like I'm coming off like I don't believe anyone, I just like to read things myself too, and it just didn't make sense to me logically :)

It's alright, I didn't think you were trying to argue :)

Ebay and logic don't go together.

Ebay staff and knowledge also don't go together.

Ebay and Paypal do go together, despite now being separate companies and Paypal not being wanted for all transactions lol.

PayPal has always been the reason I stayed away from eBay.

When I reluctantly signed up so I could post on eBay, I thought I may as well give in and use it for this situation only.

To be fair, my views of PayPal before the last few days are about 10 years old when in College, back when it took weeks to get money from the bank to (and from) PayPal. What was it, like 14 days? 21 days? I can't remember.

I've also never needed to have PayPal before, and beyond this eBay experience I doubt I'll really need it again.

Unfortunately sofas and most new household furniture does lose most of its value as soon as you buy it so you MIGHT have to lower your expectations.

Where I live you can stick a for sale ad in the local paper for free and believe it or not, people do still read them and buy stuff from them. Or even a good old fashioned card in a shop window.

If you do go with ebay though I really wouldn't worry too much about wording it. I've sold no end of stuff on there with the precise wording "Buyer to collect from me in xxxx please with cash on collection only", and never had a problem with it.
Also - and others might say this isn't allowed or whatever - put your phone number on the ad. People who are genuinely interested will ring you and you might be able to do a quick cash deal outside of ebay. Doesn't always work but sometimes it does.

Paypal isn't really a bad thing. It does offer protection on both sides so long as you follow what they say and it is quick and simple to use. It's not always the best payment option, but there isn't one payment option that is best for all situations.

I don't know, I think when I first started using Paypal it was a few days. Now I get payments to my bank right away.

I've stated payment on collection, cash highly preferred.

I'm not giving it up on selling for our lowest price just yet as it is like it was when new. There is no way I'm giving it away for free because it really is in near perfect condition (I know people will often say that, I wish I was lying, it's stood up really really well) and I've seen similar older sofa's in worse condition go for a good chunk more than the our starting price on eBay looking at recent sales, so I'll keep it on for a few weeks, and unless we really cannot find a buyer before we have to move, and it being less than our minimum just to try and get it to go, then I'll find somewhere to donate to a family in need via. a charity.
