Unfortunately the displays on many current touch screen devices are fragile and won't survive small drops, it's rare to see my sister's Iphone/Ipod Touch without a cracked display.
As mentioned above it may still be worth speaking to Amazon and try for some good will, they may offer a reduced price to swap for a refurbished unit.

Bought from Argos BUT is an Amazon product so perhaps complaining re the build is the way I would understand itpappa_golf wrote: »a:argos the retailer

Your contract is with the retailer, not the manufacturer.
The retailer is responsible for replacing a defective item (ignoring, for the moment, that this case doesn't concern a defective item), and they themselves, would, if they consider it appropriate/worthwhile, take it up with the manufaturer.0 -

I agree BUT as stated {after your stated confusion} the OP may be looking towards Amazon as in their opinion {correct or not} that the build was not good enough to survive a low drop.0 -
Trouble is, what is a small drop?
OP reckons 12", why not 13" or even 350mm?
How long is a piece of string?

Although the excess amount on the home insurance policy may not make it worth it.0

Would likely be a bad idea to claim on home insurance as the excess may be close to replacement cost and a claim might increase next year's premium.
If you drop most things that have glass on them, they'll break, whether that's a defect or a fact or life we all have our own ideas I guess.

Different manufacturer but when I dropped and cracked an Iphone a few years back having had it for just a couple of months, I took it into an Apple genius (although it was bought through vodafone) and as I hadn't had it long they fixed it FOC (without me asking them to). So may be worth a tug at Amazon's 'heartstrings'.0

You were unlucky, some you win, some you lose, like dropping your phone 7ft, you might not be lucky doing that again next time.0 -
I have done the same with an ereader, fell asleep and it's fallen out of my hands onto a carpeted floor and been damaged..
My fault, my responsibility - Silly me - should have hunted around for somebody else to blame.0
