Didn't Merc sort out the rust problem by about 04/05?

There's less to go wrong with older cars, cars have probably peaked for reliability now all the extra technology, longer service intervals on the newer stuff is causing havoc.
Today's cars look massively complicated compared to those of 25 years ago - but don't forget, 25 years ago we would have been saying the same thing!

I remember a Rover 214 had broken down in the street near me circa 1990 and watched the AA man scratching his head saying it had one of these new fangled fuel injection systems so he could only tow it in.

Had this forum been around at the time, we would have all been spouting on about how good our Webers, SUs and Zenith Strombergs were...

But, we no longer pour petrol into the cylinders via a bottle with a pin stuck in it, meaning engines don't scrape themselves to death by 50,000 miles and when the temperature drops below zero - the UK no longer wakes to the sound of whirr whirr whirr whirr whirr whirr whirr whirr whirr whirr whiiir waarrr waaaaarrr waaaaaaaaaaar *click* *DAMN IT*

1.6 HDi - this one is the 92hp version.

Got 3/4 mile down the road one morning before a huge red oil can appeared on the MFD and "Oil Pressure Fault Turn Off Engine" and the big STOP light in red.

Recovered - fault did not occur at the dealer, but recorded on the ECU.

No hesitation from Peugeot - told dealer to replace a laundry list of parts right away... Read into that what you will!

Had a feeling it might be a 1.6HDi.

Not one of the best engines as far as longevity goes.

A shame as it is a nice little engine before it goes bang.

The last Carb equipped vehicle I drove was the V8 Convoys at work, Automatic with the 4Speed ZF box, useless aftermarket AirCon and a manual choke.

I think they still had SU Carbs on them.

The latest of which were 2001/X Plate.

Probably the last production vehicle built with Carbs. I suspect there will be many specialist vehicles later than that year or kit cars but these were just LDV Convoys.

    Much nicer than a diesel.

I find that surprising, even considering v8s were only police/ambulance/military special orders. Carbs and cats don't play nicely together, and while there were a VERY few attempts at electronically controlled carbs for a year or two after cats become legally required in 1992, they were absolute bargain-basement dog-ends.

Just because a vehicle is old doesn't make it a "banger"

The owner makes it a banger by running it with zero maintenance and ignoring problems till the cars stops.

Just bought an 05 Mondeo for the BiL at Auction £750+ fees and it has loads of receipts for maintenance up to and including the MOT in August last year.

    Only 87k

Not a banger by any means as it has been looked after by the second owner that owned it from just under a year old till a few days ago.

Not by the definition of bangernomics - which is to run a car, usually under £1,000 and performing only essential maintenance - if theres a ding on the wing or the rear electric window doesnt work, who cares? Once you hit a massive repair bill - gearbox failure, head gasket, you simply sell off the remains, rinse and repeat.

Unfortunately in this country, the masses consider "banger" to mean anything more than 3 years old.

Dont knock it, I thank the people who buy new and take the initial depreciation hit so lots of nice cars hit the used markets. I doubt I would buy brand new.

I was discussing this with a colleague who works out of the amsterdam office, they have to pay a lot more for used cars than we do, so much so, I have viewed, bought and delivered 3 cars to him.

    Yes/No

Problem is people don't look after them properly because they see them as being "an old shed" or at the least a throw away item.

Biggest depreciation hit I've ever taken was on a Citroen XM. Over 7 years, I lost just under £4k on it.

Don't s'pose I could complain too much, though - it'd shed £21k from list in the four years before I bought it...
