My E class is celebrating its 28th birthday this year. Silky smooth straight six - accelerates like it's electric. Memory seats, remote headrests, full climate control and a slide/tilt sunroof. Leaving nothing to chance, even the little flow control wheels on the air vents light up at night. Feels rock solid to drive on a wet motorway at 70mph.

Last MoT the tester joked about there being zero rust anywhere... pointing to a 10 year old 'lesser brand' which he'd just failed for it...

Just because a vehicle is old doesn't make it a "banger"

The owner makes it a banger by running it with zero maintenance and ignoring problems till the cars stops.

Just bought an 05 Mondeo for the BiL at Auction £750+ fees and it has loads of receipts for maintenance up to and including the MOT in August last year.

Only 87k

Not a banger by any means as it has been looked after by the second owner that owned it from just under a year old till a few days ago.

The newest of our cars is 26yo this year, and has just turned over 165k miles today - at the end of a 300+mile round trip for a NY party.

Probably best to stick with that Merc as newer Mercedes E Class (late 90's early to mid 00's) would be more likely to be a rust bucket than yours and indeed most cars of the same age.

Motorbike and second car will be 20 this year, the car fell into the spirit of the bangernomics thread.

Plan to do all the fluids/filters on the Mitsubishi and apply more underseal when the weathers better, hopefully get another 20 years out it .

I also lease a 208 - primarily so I have something "reliable" for business travel.

The reason I've been using the 'old banger' Merc more recently is because the 208 (18 months old, < 25k miles) has been VOR needing a new oil pump, relief valve, seals, etc, etc!!!

At least your 'banger' is from this century, my two are from 1991 and 1982.

Didn't Merc sort out the rust problem by about 04/05?

There's less to go wrong with older cars, cars have probably peaked for reliability now all the extra technology, longer service intervals on the newer stuff is causing havoc.

1.6 HDi - this one is the 92hp version.

Got 3/4 mile down the road one morning before a huge red oil can appeared on the MFD and "Oil Pressure Fault Turn Off Engine" and the big STOP light in red.

Recovered - fault did not occur at the dealer, but recorded on the ECU.

No hesitation from Peugeot - told dealer to replace a laundry list of parts right away... Read into that what you will!
