Is 40 inch to small for 4K TV?

I'm buying a new TV's during the sales. The one I have in mind is the Samsung UE40JU6400. It ticks all my boxes and I don't need satellite.
This topped my list because it was a 4K TV . It's been suggested to me, however, that a 40 inch screen is just a tad to small for 4K, I'm wondering what you TV geeks think
. I appreciate there is not much 4K about at the moment but I'm thinking Netflix
John Lewis is selling at £499
And a Happy New Year to all

I'm no techno geek but I have a Sony YouView 43" 4K UHD TV and the pictures superb where upscaled HD is concerned. :T0

I have a 40" Samsung UHD TV, a similar model. I have average eyesight for my age, and a 4K source looks brilliant when I'm a couple of feet from the screen. When I get more than 6 feet away I cant really tell the difference between 4K and 1080p.
I'd still buy again though as it was a bargain, but unless you are 20-something and going to sit right next to the TV its really not so important on a 40" TV. However the TV still works really well with 1080p/720p sources, and the built in HD freeview tuner gives really good pictures.0 -
Thats a very important point. Is 4K worth it for upscaled HD pictures? It really all depends on how far away you sit from the size of screen you have. The smaller the screen the closer you have to be to see the difference. Further away, one probably wouldn't notice it at all.0

As above, what is the viewing distance? That is what should determine the screen size.No free lunch, and no free laptop0

There was a very long thread some time ago, about optimum viewing distances -I seem to remember that I was told that I shouldn't sit more than 1.5 metres from my 51" screen to see the difference between SD and HD!!
HOWEVER, some of the SD channels are so bad now, that you can see the difference between SD and HD at the end of my lounge -25 feet away:rotfl::rotfl:0 -
Understanding that, with up to 32", HD was not noticeably better than SD, we expected to be able to tell the difference between SD and HD on the new advanced technology 42", but rarely can (as while switching from the SD to HD version of a channel the scene has usually changed). The tv does actually have an HD tuner, as opposed to just capability.
I can tell when my son does not have HD on his tv, as the picture looks fuzzy, but that is a 50" screen.0 -
Normally I'll be about 3 meters away but when I'm alone in the house I quite frequently pull the set closer to the tv, and the fire. At that stage I'm about 4 ft away0

Doesn't being so close hurt your eyes ?0 -
Bear in mind that you won't be watching "proper" 4k yet, as TV service providers don't offer it yet. When I had my sky installed recently the engineer hold me BT would be the first to offer it at some point in 2016.0
