the biggest issues with tyres in the UK is the stupid 1.6mm legal tread limit. Far too low for a wet country. What amazes me further is how many cars you see when walking around with tyres even balder than the minimum. Not just old banger either, fairly expensive cars. But I suppose if the driver has the latest mobile phone etc etc they think they have their priorities right.

Not just UK though, 1.6mm limit is across Europe.

Lots of people in countries where Winter tyres are required change them when the tread reaches 4mm.

In Austria they are no longer considered to meet the Winter tyre legal requirement laws if below 4mm.

Winter tyres have an extra Tread Depth Indicator at 4mm for that reason.

Part-worn tyre dealers can source Winter tyres from Germany and Austria very cheaply because of those laws.

I would never run a tyre down to the 1.6mm legal tread limit, I like to change my tyres at 3mm which many including my tyre supplier think is mad

in work now all our fleet vehicles have the tyres changed at 2mm so even fleet think the 1.6 mm legal limit is to low

in the days of cars being all rear wheel drive pre Alex issigonis mini which i will add were before my driving days you heard stories of people putting weight in the boot of a rear wheel drive car to improve grip during winter months

Front wheel drive pre-dates Issigonis' Mini by many years.

a racing car has the option of slicks, intermediate, or wet tyres

and a racing car on the slicks when the track is wet is a recipe for disaster

I am well aware of that but in 1959 when the mini was launched you can bet your life that 99% of all cars on british roads were rear wheel drive

the mini is the car that made a transverse engine and front wheel drive a popular option
