Fri 1st Jan - What Small DFW-Style Things Will You Be Doing Today?

CLF - Love the sound and idea of your "vision board", hope you don't mind if I pinch that idea too
Go for it! I'm glad you like it :
Ally - I love your and your OH's plan ideas too. I tend to break down problems in my head like this tooLBM 11/06/2010: DFD 30/04/2013Total repaid: £10,490.310 -
New year, new start so I'm currently sitting down with YNAB4 and my husband. I'm determined to nail this. We've not done too badly last year, I don't think but I do know there are areas we can (and should) budget better, we don't plan for birthdays for example and I'm sure we overspend on food.
Other than that, nothing particularly DFW style. I have blog posts to write and studying to do though. Somehow planning and budgeting feels more exciting!0 -
Back again. This forum is addictive.
* I just cleaned the inside of the car. What a mess. It's rained every day off for a month so the poor thing has been neglected so out with the Stardrops, the fake-Milton, some old t-shirts for cloths and the secondhand Dyson. I'm now watching the weather like a hawk as the rear windows are open to air it. The car mats are £2 rubber ones from Tesco so they are now in the washing machine on a quick wash along with our doormat.
* Lunch is a roast leg of lamb and homemade stuffing alongside. OH bought two for £10. Gravy made with the water from the veg.
* Watching stuff recorded off the tv.
* Read the news online.
* Have nursed ailing fuschia back to life.

Fab posts from you today Ally
thanks so much for sharing your experiences.
So we went to Mr S. I took 4 wombled reciepts with me and had them add those on for 11 points. I shopped using a list and had several coupons in my purse for extra points.
There was a lot of discounted meat. I bought a whole chicken for £3. A pack of 500g pork for £1 & two packs of 8 sausages for 75p each. That's easily a weeks meat for less than £6. The chicken will be cooked tommorow for a roast.
I also decided that as I needed new tops I'd make use of an 800 point voucher if I spent £20. (Xmas money) I was very annoyed having shopped to find the exact value and managed to get a shirt and 2 long sleeved t shirts for £20.50 that when I got to the till one of the tops had been reduced further than was marked. You would think this was good but it meant my coupon wouldn't work.
So I've emailed them to complain and said I'd specifically shopped to benefit from the points and don't see why I shouldn't get them for that reason. My only choice was to cancel off all my shopping, go and look for another top, & possible have exactly the same thing happen.
Anyway after taking off £15 in nectar points I managed to earn 40 extra points for buying a box of eggs I'd have got anyway and as the total spend before vouchers was £43 I used a 5 x points voucher as well.
Total spent today was £28 in total but I feel I got all the essentials we needed plus freezer food so I'm pleased with that. Have almost £5 in points accrued still.
Came home and made the Christmas roast veg into a soup using the turkey stock and frozen scraps of spaghetti. It's really nice and rustic.
We did go to a coffee shop too but 1 of the drinks was free using points.
So not a NSD in the end but I feel I shopped very well.
Oh and son found 2p in road kill to start the new score.

Ally what a wonderful, thoughtful post. I have thought a lot about what you said and will put those ideas into practice. For me I dont think I have really come to terms with DS1 becoming ill and all the practical, financial and emotional issues that this has caused, even though it is now 6 years since he was diagnosed.
There are so many uncertainties ahead and I am not the sort of person who copes well with uncertainties. There are a lot of difficulties in my life that I cant change right now and these seem to outweigh the good stuff at the moment.
This may just pass. As you say the time of year doesnt help.
Sorry for moaning!0 -

It's about only keeping things that bring you joy, as opposed to getting rid of things that you don't like (IYSWIM). I found that I was able to get rid of a lot of things that I had "just because". I didn't think that I had very much stuff, but it turns out that there was a lot that just didn't speak to me.
Ohhhh thanks Carrie - I haven't seen that but off to check it out now!
I really am terrible and need to get a grip on it - drawers / cupboards are full of stuff I never use and the stuff I do use is hanging on the outsides!

Happy New Year one and all,.
Thanks Ally for the start. I love reading your posts, you always seem to know just what to say
Clf, I love the sound of the vision board.
We didn't go out last night either and only managed to stay awake until 10;30! Had a lovely lie in this morning though, kids got up at 8am and went downstairs to play with their toys, dh got up and made me a cuppa at 9:30 we sat in bed and chatted for a bit. I flicked the tv over and a DIY sos was just starting, I;ve never watched it before but as the guy starting talking I recognised his story, then he mentioned that he'd had support from an online forum which was MSE and I remembered reading this guys posts on here a few years ago, It was so lovely to be able to see that the support he received from mse helped him so much and both dh & I were in tears at the end of the programme when nick Knowles revealed the work they'd done. It was a lovely way to start the day.
We didn't get up until 11am and it wasn't raining so we decided to pop over to my mum and dads so have spent the afternoon there and they fed us
Called into co0p on the way home and picked up a few ys bits for tea.
All the usual small things done such as fpl/luckyphone/banking checked.
Hope you all have a lovely evening

CLF- Love the idea of a Vision Board. I am also intending to make a sort of motivational banner, but your idea sounds better.
Ally - Great advice as usual.
YorkshireLass- Something that is working well for me when fretting about the more difficult things in my life & what might happen in the future, is to repeatedly push them out of my head while telling myself firmly that I'll deal with it when it happens. This has worked well over the last year when I found my thoughts becoming overladen with worries. And the ones which did actually happen? I did deal with them all. Worry is very human, but such a thief of time, inner peace & wellness. It"s natural to worry, but also pointless if it's fretting about stuff we have no power to change. Better to have a plan for changing the things it's possible to change & leave the things outside our power to tackle if indeed they do occurr. Some things never actually do. They are just in our heads.
