I need to use up the cabbage tomorrow and my husband is not a cabbage lover. We belong to a club where we get local area produce trucked in and all meet in the parking lot of a local doctors office to divide it. We buy monthly for the two of us, but it can be bought weekly for larger families. The produce consists of in season items and as I'm new to knowing what's in season, it's usually a bit of a surprise.
Anyway last time I got two cabbages and that's a bit much for OH to not begrudge eating in one month's time. He keeps going though because our savings are really worth it and the quality is excellent.
Have you tried cabbage as coleslaw or in a stir fry? Makes a change from just steamed or boiled0 -

I never used too like cabbage either (love it now as long as it's not over-cooked), but back in those days I remember liking having the cabbage baked with apple and cider underneath a pork joint. A 70's / 80's recipe (probably from the Hamlyn All Colour Cookbook -for those who remember) I think but I'm sure you could find the recipe or similar on the InternetAiming for a Champagne Lifestyle on a Lemonade Budget

Day 77/366 Another NSD. Have managed to repurpose a small woollen rug I had as a mat for a table. Result!

Dinner tonight was a concoction of leftovers and stuff that needed using up. Sometimes my 'specials' are very tasty other times they are edible but not particularly exciting. Tonight I made a dish combining broccoli, carrots, peppers, pasta, a bowl of cauliflower cheese and some parmesan. It was absolutely yummy and very cheap!
This morning I had a cold shower. Not for the invigorating tingle but because our shower has gone kaput! There is always an unexpected expense in a household. I'm so glad that we can afford to replace the shower even though we may not want to spend the money!
Hope everyone is managing to stick to frugal ways. Spring is nearly here and the outdoors costs nothing to enjoy and I am so ready to be sitting outside on my patio!Stashbusting 2019 - 230/3000 -
I am in the process of moving so because of that I have done well. No online purchases this month because I have only got the internet reconnected today, though I did seriously upgrade my package I am not fussed as I get I use it a lot.
No buying meant no deliveries and I have been concentrating on paying off debts. I have even lived off YS items to keep the costs down rather than order in anything expensive. In fact I think I will be using up my food stocks so I can get away without spending and allow a refresh of the food stocks. It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.0 -

Another tasty way of using up cabbage (the original recipe calls for red cabbage but green cabbage can be used as well) is to slice thinly and stir fry with onions and a mixture of sliced eating apples and bramley apples, and add in some chopped smoked frankfurter sausage. You may need to add a little cider or chicken stock to keep the mixture moist but don't overcook the cabbage as it's nice when still slightly crispy. Serve on its own or with some mashed potato.0 -
We love mashed potato and cooked cabbage mixed together and fry do not flick over until it has a nice brown crust under it. We have it with bread and butter and brown sauce, it freezes well too.
The wool I bought for £4.20'has now been knitted into a beautiful babies Pram/buggy blanket and DD is over the moon with it. xWhy pay full price when you may get it YS0 -
I love all the cabbage ideas! Thanks to you all. It's a very large cabbage, so I may try a few different ideas.
I've decided to start cooking out of my massive store of food. We raised six kids (plus a lot of their friends were always over) so I needed to stockpile food and do big shops. Now that everyone is grown and gone, I don't need to do that any more...but I still do. I also was used making double and triple recipes. I have had a hard time learning to not cook so much and about have got that whipped, but the stockpiling food is harder for me to not do. I love a good sale and think 'oh, I'll have five of those'.
So, I'm determined to cut way back on our monthly grocery bill and use up what we have on hand.Overprepare, then go with the flow.

Day 78/366 Spends on the weekly shop. I've run out of time to do anything clever for Easter so have bought eggs but on offer. We've been invited to help my parents eat up a joint they bought for Christmas but never got around to eating....I know it's traditional to have Xmas pud at Easter but can't stand it but what I do have is a ys pack of filo and some mincemeat lurking so shall whip up a pud of some description to go with the meal on Easter Sunday.
