Rust/corrosion marks on rear wheels - 6 month old car.

I've bought a Kia Picanto with 1400 miles on the clock, from a Kia dealer. I've noticed - though I didn't at the time - that there are rust marks on the rear wheel hubs. I was able to wipe some off but some won't come off.

Is this normal for a 6 month old car - I just got it recently? Or should I be worried?

And if it is normal, is there a way of removing or minimising the staining? See the pic..

  • Seriously?

If you are serious, then you need to find other things to worry about. This is normal, exposed parts rust.

Its made of cast iron if its disc brakes its part of the disc brake. You can get something called Purple Rain or IRONX from an Auto Detail stockist. I keep mine clean with it. Just spray a small amount on the hub, coat the rest of the alloy and it removes iron particles and fall out.

I've just twigged the rust is on the brake discs, but I was worried about it in case it was a major issue - so seems like it does happen. Anyone know if there's a way to remove some of it?
  • I'd be more concerned about the kumho tyres.
  • This is completely normal and nothing to worry about. Same as railway rails- they get a small layer of rust which is cleaned whenever the train goes over it, but the sides of the track never gets cleaned, just as the edge of your discs.

Some cars have painted discs to reduce it, but it's nothing to worry about and if you look at other cars you will see virtually all cars have the same.

Yeah, they will surely result in disaster.

Some cars even have rear brakes.

I have had Khumo's on several cars and no issues, KU31's and lately KU39's.

They grip very very well and controllable, if you wanted to exit a bend at 70mph and still accelerating and it starts to drift its steady and controlled no sudden loss of grip. An excellent tyre for the price.

    Painted disks? Really?

Detailers do it, I don't think any of the manufacturers do it though.
