Charis - you can transfer all your credits and DD's to a new account but that does not mean you have to close the old one. Just leave a small amount of money in it. It is perfectly legal to have more than one bank account and sometimes quite useful!
:) I ran two current accounts for two years, with one just sitting there with some money in it, not doing anything. I'd transferred the wages and the DD to a new account to get a cash bribe and interest incentive and later transferred them back to my original bank

Neither organisation had anything to say about the matter.

Good point Charis, same thing happened to me last year. I needed to keep the old account for various reasons and so I did not get the cash from the new bank as it was only a "partial switch"
GQ I concur; some years ago, when making someone redundant one time (I get all the great jobs) they were able to,give me copies of their payslips from the year dot, which they had kept. This proved they had longer service than their "official" start date and added a large amount of cash to their payment. I bet that lady never regretted keeping every payslip she was ever given - from back in the 1990's!

I opened a new bank account last week, thanks to the MSE weekly email. I'll get more for switching than interest on my ISA. However you only get the bonus if you do a complete switch, which means closing your existing account.

While I was perusing the T's and C's I noticed a reminder that if you close your account you will no longer have access to your online statements, and suggesting that you copy them before you do. Just thought I should mention it, as I remember someone on here recently saying that you don't need to keep copies of your old statements because they are available online. You may be able to get paper copies but that will take time and the way the banks are squeezing the interest it may be that they start to charge for paper copies.

In the interest of reducing paper in our homes you can usually download the statements and then just save them digitally (and have them backed up somewhere, of course!) :)

:T Official records can be inaccurate, as your former employee found out.

Official records can also be inaccurate at DWP, HMRC and at other places. I've known people who needed to evidence their income for means-tested benefits and couldn't. Why? Bank statements they'd had and destroyed from banks they no longer banked with (and had tried and failed to get statements from) and payslips they'd binned.

Try telling someone desperate for cash to pay their rent that we can't calcuate a means-tested benefit without their proofs and you flinch at their distress.

I liked and agree with a lot of KM's books but her attitude to paperwork gave me palpitations!:rotfl:

tidying really works. today DH had to leave home early to get to a funeral. last night he got his shoes jacketsd all other clothes out of his wardrobe in a few seconds and put them out ready to put on today. no searching, no ironing really easy. great.

Kondoing has taken a back seat for a while due to RL things going on and it'll be a few more weeks before I can get back to it.

Kittie, loving the momentum you have going. Once you start to see Kondo results it's hard not to keep going isn't it as it feels wonderful to have your home becoming clearer.

Am another one who flinched when reading the book originally regarding paperwork, particularly for those of us who have to keep records for HMRC. I have to confess to keeping these in the loft as there's nowhere else in my tiny rabbit hutch bungalow to store them.

:) Thanks for that excellent point, Charis.

It may not be kondo-esque or even entirely rational, but I will admit to keeping all bank statements. They don't take up much space when archived into sealed envelopes by year but would be invaluable in the event of a dispute.

My employer went online for pay slips and P.60s years ago, and I print hardcopy of those as well.

I've seen very serious consequences to not having easy access to this data so am prepared to sacrifice a few inches of storage to buy my peace of mind, but it's horses for courses, naturally, and others will have different opinions.

I save the PDFs to the hard drive and have one folder per bank account per year. All in one folder marked 'Banks' Of course that means that I need to back them up twice, once on site and once elsewhere in case of hard drive failure, fire, theft, burglary etc. I usually lag on that :(

Unfortunately you can't do that if you want the bonus for the complete switch, which is worth the trouble of opening another current account with the old bank. I had to do that anyway, so I could access my ISA and Loyalty saver. I did check with them and they said it was fine to so so.
  • I managed to start on this and have done my bags and shoes. I must say that it was a lot easier than the first time 'round. I remember the sitting room being strewn with a ton of shoes and I must have gotten rid of about 30/50 odd pairs. This time it was different, as I don't have that many and found it easier to let go of those that I really don't wear, apart from 2, so I'm going to try them on and then decide later.

Today I want to tackle My wardrobe, which is just the clothes rail. I really do have a load of rubbish clothes hanging around and I am going to try and be brutal - I only have until 1pm, so hopefully I will get it done and if I get any time later, I will tackle books. I know its a bit 'jump aroundie', and not quite to her plan, which I do think is genius, but the books are stored in baskets in the sitting room and so I can do them while I am watching tv in the evening - kind of 'slot them in'. Maybe I should have just started with them, to get them out of the way, but never mind. Being a bit 'nerdie' I have added the categories to my signature, it helps when I tick things off a list. Have a lovely day everyone.

I discovered this blog a week or so ago while reading about the Minimalists. I had to share it with you. I chose a random post but there is also a lot of food for thought in his archives:
