ah... but 'we've put it in there as we know you love it so much'. And then 'oops the next visitor was a teenager/toddler who broke it' (or even better - oh... I didn't realise it was gone... a visitor must have broken/stolen it)0

Sometimes I think it's important to forgo our own joy in order to accept the joy someone else has in thinking they have given us something we would like. If it will go amoung your china what harm is that? Instead of seeing the object that doesn't quite suit, perhaps see the thoughtfulness in trying to please. I think it's sweet that she is looking at her things and trying to give them to the right person.
Then in the future you can use Pooky's way of handling anymore 'gifts'.(I just love this way of dealing with unwanted gifts  )
Overprepare, then go with the flow.

Growing up we had 2 houses, one was tied to my Dad's work in London so parents bought another on the south coast for retirement - they had yellow Beryl in London and green at the other house. When they retired they gave us the green set. It lasted for ever but have to say I was glad when it eventually went to the great china shop at the tip!
Kondoed 4 cassette books to one of the dinner ladies at work, she loves them and I don't have a player. One check blanket for a wee boy at school who has to use a wheelchair and gets a little chilly at playtime and two cube shelves from the conservatory - they went down to the recycling centre so probably in someone elses home by now.
In came a new kitchen, it's all wrapped up in the conservatory waiting for the builder.0 -
My mum loves pigs so yes you've guessed it she gets gifted lots of pig ornaments. (Before the pigs it was bells) she could see the way her collections were spiralling so declared to all especially her childn that unless we wanted to inherit a boxful of bells and pigs each she needs to cull her collections so she kept her absolute favourites from each and all the rest were washed boxed and sent to the charity shop. One of her friends told her she had already bought the perfect gift for her forthcoming birthday and she wasn't to even think about refusing it or sending it to the chasser because of the cost and thought put into it. Mum didn't want to offend her friend so kept the gift but it is truly awful. She has had to tuck it into the hedge so that it is only part seen her friend does check each visit it is still there and queried why it was in such an obscure position. Mum honestly said she didn't want to have to explain it to her grandchildren who visit frequently and and also if it was fully on view there might be the risk of such an eyecatching piece being stolen. The rather large garden sculpture in question is two stone pigs in mounted position with writing etched around the base declaring that immortal phrase "look we're makin' bacon"
Just who every post lite upstanding 70+ year old wants in her garden. Lol does have a sense of humour but that's not really to her taste.SPC~12 ot 124

Oh dear, I don't know which is funnier - the unlucky recipient having to camouflage this 'thoughtful' gift, or the idea that out of all the zillions of items in the world, the so-called friend chose these pigs!“All shall be well, and all shall be well and all manner of thing shall be well.”0 -

Got a sudden surge of energy and motivation and for the last 5/6 hours I have been clearing out DD1 old bedroom which has become a bit of a dumping ground...........she has a lot of things still in there but I have done a bit of reorganising and its all a little bit more under control now - DD2 has dumped all her old A level notes in there so now needs to go through them....I have been hinting for a while but now I am insisting
Lots of outdoor gear been left in there so I have sorted through t all and boxed it up to go into the shed tomorrow. Hung up the sleeping bags and down jackets in the hanging space and put a couple of coats that we do wear but not regularly in there too. Filled another bin liner for CS and the paper recycle box. Burnt a lot of cardboard - old shoe boxes on the log burner, sorted out some cables from long gone phones and electronics to go to recycle centre tomorrow, found some stuff to eb*y and to fr**cycle and put some general detritus - stuff that has died or is gasping its last in storage - in the wheelie
Wide awake but going to take a book to bed that I need to read for book group......hoping I will drop off quickly

Dammit, mrs-moneypenny, just about spat breakfast over my keyboard reading about the 'tasteful' garden ornament. Why-oh-why would anyone make such a thing? Oh, that'll be because some people see fit to buy it and inflict it on innocent friends.:rotfl:
Had an emotionally-rewarding moment yesterday when I gifted a slight acquaintance with a hat which Mum had made. It was made when my Grandad was alive (died in 1999) but seems not to have been worn and resurfaced in a drawer at Nan's and was going into a chazzer bag. As it matched a beloved hat of this person which he'd accidentally ruined in a hot wash, I intercepted it to offer him first refusal.
He was very happy, doffed his other hat declaring it was now demoted to gardening hat, and wore that one. I was pleased as I'd been carrying it about for the past 10 days waiting to bump into him.
Was round a friend's last night and she'd been in her attic and come down with three skeins of rug wool which she's given to me. She was pleased to do so, because I cut it up into lengths right there and then and will be using it on the current project. She bought it from a chazzer, thinking she'd make a rug at some point, but the emotion went, she's busy about other handcrafts, and it was becoming a bit of a burden.
She said she was glad that she had given it to me, as it means she now doesn't feel obligated to start a rug project to use it up.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Morning all
Loving the tasteless pig story Mrs MP all I can say is why oh why do this to 'friends'
My friends are moved in the house was left lovely with little notes on everything telling them how things worked. a folder with every bit of info anyone could want. When the bins were collected, bus time tables in fact everything :T So the people who moved a massive KM tick for them.
But my friends had a lorry load of boxes so much stuff I couldnt believe it. They had got rid of loads so I have no idea how bad it was before. So much with shed.garage and loft written on the boxes. dozens of boxes have made there way into the loft already which is massive and has shelves all round it. 6 of us emptied the lorry from 4pm until 7pm non stop and 90% was boxes :rotfl:
She said she now needs to get a skip  as she didnt realise they brought so much carp with them :rotfl:So they paid to move it here now they have to pay for a skip to get rid of the carp they packed in the first place.
I still reckon I could be packed and out of here in about 1-1.5 hours and I am so bl**dy happy about that.
I hope she packed KMs book I brought for her as she is going need to read it as she couldnt have even opened it yet
