impromptu tip run this morning with three drawers from an ikea CoD (I need to take the frame apart to get it in the car and into the skip at the tip), a broken ice maker and more bits from the stairs that the builders failed to remove.

Tip is very tempting - there were lots of things I wanted to kidnap for the CS, like a copper coal bucket, and perfectly good saucepans... but I was good and left them there.

I wouldn't take it out of hiding. If she asks where it is show her and perhaps she will get the message that you don't like it enough for it to be on show and take it back.

Another pile of magazines from the attic went into recycling this morning. There are more up there I'm working through but they should all be gone by Christmas

Ditto leaving the cup and saucer at the very back of the cupboard, way, way back, so that if MiL does ask where it is you'll have to pull out most of your other stuff in front of her. She might get the message.

Why have you got the ruddy things anyway? If they are so precious to her, why hasn't she got them?

Totally agree, that was one of the first things I picked up from kondoing, if you don't want or can't use something don't fob it of on another family member and give them the guilt of hanging on to it.
I DO happily give things away and offer them to people I know can and will use them BUT I won't force stuff onto others just to give them the guilt of what to do with it.
I would be tempted to say I've had a thought and haven't got either the room or the desire to keep whatever item (in this case the cup and saucer and give it her back on the next visit with the instructions that she can keep it herself or pass it on to a CS if she doesn't want it herself.
Sorry if that sounds really harsh in print but we aren't making space in our homes for others to fill we are making space because that what we want round us.:D

She's 86 and trying to declutter.... And I suppose she thinks I like them and I haven't the heart to say I don't.

Can you put it in the spare room she's staying in so she can enjoy it and you don't have to?

I guess at 86 you won't have to keep it for long, but in future, say you don't have a use for it/space for it, but you'll pass it on to someone who would like it (even if that is the CS) and that way she can declutter with your help.

Good idea but it doesn't remotely 'go' with anything in the room she'll be staying in so it's a bit obvious. I'll 'hide it' in amongst my visible china for her next visit so she can see it, after that it can go.

It's not quite so hideous as a Gaudi inspired cat my neighbour gave me. I stuck that in our fireplace for a few months so it was on show when she looked after our cat. I moved it onto a non-local CS and have the story that a friend admired it and it went with her decor more than mine.

  • 21 cooking magazines to thr Mental Health center waiting room. The staff was very appreciative.

My husband and son are clearing out the front half of the workroom. To name a few items gone are an old leaf blower that has been dead for years, but DH thought could be fixed. Also an edge trimmer....same MO.

The heartbreaking thing is they found boxes of tile I could have used to replace the ones torn out when my leaky water line was dug up in our kitchen. They were hidden under all the junk. I thought DH had thrown them out years ago. Our home owner's insurance (minus the $1000 deductible  ) paid to replace three rooms because it is continuous tile throughout. Our tile was 31 yrs old and still looked beautiful. Not money saving at all and goes to show why we need to know what we possess.

We would have still had to pay the deductible because the plumber charged over $7000, but I loved that tile and would have been satisfied to keep it. That's not to say I'm not thrilled with the new as it is more modern and has led to DH letting loose of the purse strings to get some remodeling done. :j
