Excellent work Mavymoo another Konvert. 2 bags to the CS today. Including a pair of canvas shoes only bought at the beginning of the summer. I wore them once and they did not spark joy in my feet! I had to go to 2 CS's as the first one wouldn't take magazines. So she picked out all of the odd bits - the mini milk bottles, the wooden puzzle, the DVD, the shoes . . . Added to my steps count by walking round the corner to one that did.
Mini Kondoes are the way and yes every time I put something away I spy another thing to be thanked and sent on its way! Better nights sleep so feeling more in control again. I can do this!

    :) Afternoon all.

Not that long back from Nan's (where I kondo'd some weeds, glass and nails from the leek bed) and am easing into a bit of sneaky kondo-ing.

Stalking the sideboard top, I pulled off a large pot which was rammed to overflowing with pairs of scissors, pens, pencils, letter openers and rulers. Asked Mum to guess how many pairs of scissors and she came up well short of the true figure of 16.:rotfl:

One pair have been found to be useless and binned, the rest are all good. Half have been drawered. I would estimate that the total scissor inventory, including sewing and hairdressing types, probably runs into three figures.

One souvenir from New Zealand letter-opener is going to a chazzer and the souvenir from Canada one (both gifts) will be staying.

I also went through the pens and chucked out the dead ones, sharpened all the pencils, removed the stubby ones which were unreachable at the bottom of the jar (I shall use them up at work) and then gave the final rites to some very deceased rubber bands.

Last night, we went through the jewellery box as Mum's sorting of some photos revealed a pix of her as a late teenager, wearing a brooch which was a gift from my Dad, and we went looking for that brooch. A couple of pieces of costume jewellery have been kondo'd into my keeping, plus the earrings paired and everything tidied in there.

:D No dead birds or false teeth have been uncovered yet. I am about to go back and make another pass over smallish kipple, as there isn't time to pull stuff about before tea at 5 pm.

  • Lovely to pop back on and find an 'episode' GQ - look forward to more in due course.

Pens n pencils, bits n pieces, odds n ends really can be time-consuming. I did the g/kids pencil cases and stationery tins once and it took hours, they probably need doing again by now.

Anyway, GQ, good luck with your sideboard!

:) I have found a large plastic container half full of pens, all of which I had tested and the majority of which had to be binned. Two of them were personalised with a first name and I'd like to apologise to Jackie and to Paula - we don't know how we know you but we've somehow stolen and killed your red plastic personalised biros. Sorry. :o

Also found the autumn/ winter 2015 Argossy catalogue (now in recycling bin) and re-found Teeny Tiny Tears (TM). This was a doll I kondo'd about 40 years ago, long before the sainted Marie was a twinkle in the firmament. I told Mum I was ready to part with my dolls and my teddies and did so. The teddies seem to have successfully exited the home back in the day, but Tiny Tears (TM) and Teeny Tiny Tears (TM) had been secreted by Mum out of sentimentality.

I had kondo'd TT at least once more since the original laying aside of childish things before finding her in the loft a few years ago, nekkid and stashed in the pram bag from our proper 1960s pram (long defunct and gone). I hauled her out of there, gave her a bath and hairwash for old time's sake, dressed her in some handknit doll clothes and donated her to a chazzer. This time, when I go back to the city, TTT is going with me so I can be sure she gets donated.

:p:o Otherwise I am gonna be dealing with this blasted toy when in my sixties, I can see it coming.

In a sideboard cupboard, I found 22 packets of playing cards, some still sealed in the wrappers. We're not a big card playing family. Big on playing card purchasing, obvs, with several of them being silver jubilee ones. This isn't the sum total of the playing card inventory, I know where there are at least another 10 packs. And no, none can be got rid of because of Justin. Whom I now imagine as a Mississippi riverboat gamblin' man.:rotfl:

I also went into a small cupboard on the wall unit looking for something else. Contents were as follows; 4 pairs of wooden handles for you to make fabric knitting bags for. A packet of humourously-shaped balloons. A cardboard cylinder balloon pump dating back to my childhood, and a whizzy modern balloon pump I never saw before. A tin full of darts. A plastic tub of crochet needles and a tub full of cable-knitting needles, John Seymour's complete guide to self sufficiency in paperback (we also have two in hardcover, lol). A mayonnaise tub of little wooden pegs for the cribbage board. We've never played cribbage but Andy and Justin might fancy a go some time.:rotfl:

Me (head in cupboard) Did you know you've got a spare telephone in here?

    Mum Yes. It's a spare.

There's also the other spare, the portable one with two handsets which was a PITA and would never hold its charge but somehow has to live on shelves in two different rooms, both under a thick coat of dust. One shelf is shared by a wooden elephant with a sunfaded side and a broken tusk. It's over 40 years old to my certain knowledge.

The shire horses with the extra-long leg departed over 20 years ago via a boot sale. along with their plastic tack and the plastic wagon with the plastic beer barrels. Plus all the brass ornaments, because I put my foot down about cleaning them.

    :D Wish me luck.

  • Good luck GQ.

Especially with all the 'spares.' :rotfl:

I dropped off a bag at the c/shop earlier, where it joined the mini-mountain of today's incomings.

Wouldn't be such a problem except this particular shop seem to keep their volunteers posted at the till. When I worked for one, we kept an eye for customers approaching the till but had a sorting table nearby so the incomings didn't mount up into such a backlog. Even a simple 'rag or rubbish or keep' sift would keep it down. I appreciate that policies differ, but it seems a waste of good sorting time especially with not many customers about.

:) Think of it as time spent reading decluttering blogs and threads and limbering up your decluttering muscles.

I have retrieved an electric can opener which has been sitting on the front windowsill, boxed, for about 2 years. Since Mum's SIL returned it to her as an unwanted gift. Mum is intending to try it out to see if she likes it. They don't use many cans and there is no physical impediment to anyone using a manual can opener.

There are manual can openers in a variety of styles and materials, hand-held and wall-mounted. Actually, that reminds me, I was going to look in the drawer inside the 3rd sideboard (the 1930s one which lives in the off-room, if you remember from misadventures earlier this year) as I've been told I can have a caddy spoon if I can find one.

ETA; have fosssicked in the drawers in the 1930s sideboard. There are four wall-mounted can openers in one drawer, three of which aren't original to the household and which have never been seen by me before. There is also a small forest's worth of wooden spoons and four brand new pastry brushes. Three pairs of tongs (and two in another sideboard) and raffle tickets to draws which were held in 2007, 2009, 2009, 2009, 2009 and 2015. We musta had turrible luck in 2009 because those were for four different charities in December alone and none of them came good.

Still no caddy spoon but there are a total of 5 unsearched drawers in two out of the three sideboards but I've been told to stop pulling things around for the night.

Frogletina, have you tried freecycle for the big things?

The only thing that worries me is that I live on the top floor of an apartment block and the lift only goes to the one below. The worktop is very heavy, and the other things are quite big (large pieces of wood, all left here before I moved in) and I would worry about how careful anyone would be carrying them down the stairs. Would need at least two people.

When I had a new boiler fitted I asked if the people disposing of that if they would take two items of mine as well to the tip, thankfully they agreed to do that. One was a large piece of glass and the other a large pelmet.
