in Credit cards
I am currently using a combination of TWO credit cards. American Express (for where it is accepted) and ASDA (for where AMEX is not accepted). The latter only receives 0.5% cashback.
I just rang Barclaycard to close an old Platinum card that had reached the end of its 0% interest period (I had used it for balance transfers).
I was offered an 'upgrade' to a new 1% cashback card.
NO fee!
I was told it was only available to existing customers.
However, it was also suggested that it was a 'new' card, so perhaps it is just a new card they are about to bring on to the market.
Anyway.....I will wait to see the exact details when I receive them within the next week.
If all is ok, this will replace my Asda card, and I will going with an AMEX/Barclaycard combination.

The Barclaycard I know about is an AMEX/Visa combo (only available to existing customers). You get two cards on the same account, the first being an Amex that pays 1% cashback and the second being a Visa that pays 0.5% cashback, and I suspect this is what you have been offered.
Doesn't sound like an improvement on what you are already using unless I'm missing something - do you have more details on what exactly you are getting from Barclaycard if it is in fact something different? i.e. what card type/s and the cashback rates?0 -
yes, i suspect it will be the account that Sed refers to..
if it is a 1% Visa/Mastercard i'll be all over it..
but hitting Amex directly for 1.5%:D0 -
I was told specifically that it would be a Visa card, the same as the Platinum Visa that I currently have.
However.....I cannot confirm anything until I get the documentation within a few days.
Fingers crossed though for a 'proper' 1% cashback card.
Amex is good for 1.5% but not accepted in all places :-(There are 10 types of people in the world. Those who understand binary, and those who don't!0 -
very few places, ime
but yes, please let us know.. i am paying off a Barclaycard Freedom Rewards card in Jan, so moving the balance to MBNA(?) and then getting a 1% card out of Barclaycard would be beautiful.0 -

Which Amex card gives you 1.5% cashback? The Platinum Cashback I have only gives 1.25% and I can't find anything with 1.5%.
Please keep us informed on your new Barclaycard, whether it really gives 1%!! Thanks0 -

You just have to know where to shop. 99% of my monthly spending goes on my Amex. Slightly lower in the months I have to pay for my various insurance.0 -

That's not a terribly helpful comment.
London transport services accept Amex but that's not terribly helpful to people who live outside London.
My experiences with Amex are pretty good these days especially combined with paypal, however experiences do vary and for some people it will be next to useless.0 -

Why is it not a helpful comment? I'm merely saying that people can do a bit of research before they go out. I'm sorry can't give you a full list of places who accept Amex, I'm sure there's a list somewhere.
For people who live outside London, they would either drive or use the train? National Rail takes Amex. Most petrol stations take Amex. I'm sure sometime people go out and buy groceries, all supermarkets except Aldi and Lidl take Amex. If they live in places where it's impossible to use Amex then I have a solution too...don't apply for one. Let's let people make their own choices shall we?0 -
Yes my mistake...only 1.25% on AMEX (besides the anniversary month).
But there are lots of places that don't accept it - including numerous smaller shops and local restaurants.
Plus Home Bargains, CEX, Smyths, Wilkinsons, Aldi...
Of course you 'could' arrange your shopping around only those places that accept it, but that smacks of the 'tail wagging the dog'.....
I shop where I want to, use AMEX if I can, else my second card if it won't.
I'll update everyone when I receive the new Barclays card :-)There are 10 types of people in the world. Those who understand binary, and those who don't!0 -
I use my Santander CC for supermarkets/department stores/fuel and rail (1%/2%/3% respectively).
Amex isn't widely accepted elsewhere around here, so the majority of my 'other' spends go on my 0.5% Visa.
Will be watching this thread closely in the hope Barclaycard are now issuing a Visa or Mastercard at 1%!0
