  • It's interesting to look back at FTSE 100 predictions made on this thread 12 months ago. Hardly anyone expected FTSE to end the year above 7,000

Am I the only one that thinks it might break 7,000 again?

Well, well, I was alone but I didn't lose faith, in fact, I invested quite a bit at far less than 7,000.

Not so fast, cowboy....check post #5!

Do you happen to have a view about where the FTSE100 will end up on December 31 2017? My feeling is 8008, which is a great number because it looks a little bit rude on a calculator.

I think post 5 was a joke, I actually did invest a fair amount well below 7,000. Although I must admit it was more for the dividend income, than an expectation of massive growth. Which is why I don't predict where markets are going, I invest more for dividend income than capital growth, that is where my most of my retirement income will eventually come from.

58008619 on a calculator is naughtier still! ;)

Well quite a lot of things happened in 2016 which not many people expected.

Just remember the rise in the FTSE 100 is largely due to the fall in Sterling making the earnings from the biggest companies in the index worth more. If you look at the index in dollar terms the performance wasn't so good and the FTSE 250, which is more domestic-focused, only rose a few percent.

On the other hand the biggest risers in my pension and S&S ISA were US index trackers which were up about 30% which benefited from good rises in the US market and the weakening of Sterling.

As for 2017? Who knows... just about anything could happen in the next 12 months.

Real driver was dividends. As many of the majors pay dividends in $ and €. Dividends underpin asset values.
