SL, yes you should definitely get a student account if you are a student! Student accounts generally don't cost a penny - there are no fees and ALL of the overdraft is interest free. You also get benefits like shopping discounts, railcards, etc. Only a crazy person would stick with a normal bank account.0

Thanks you for your reply. I asked only because I wondered if i'd even get one in the first place, and if I had access to 2 overdrafts is it asking for more trouble than it's worth, after all I only just pay minimum of the rather large one I have now on my current account.
I was planning on having an account for my "bills" rent etc, and also my childcare, then use my normal one for my weekly budget the one I alreday have the O/D with)
I take it you think that's crazy

you can still have other accounts but only one student account.
just have your loans etc going into the student account and either transfer or dd other money to go into your other accounts.
also, use the overdraft on the student account as you wont have any fees etc.Light bulb moment April 07: [strike]£3,655 [/strike] Oct 07: [strike]£2,220[/strike] now 0 - 3 years of Uni debt to be added at a later datenow at Uni as a Mature student -update: now has a First Class BA!0 -

has anyone 'used' the HSBC insurance - I'm thinking of staying with HSBC and starting up the student account - it offers student insurance for things like a laptop etc.
I've never really bothered with insurance before as they tend to have to many loopholes! but as I'll be a student for the next three years I really wont be able to afford my DSLR or laptop going missing / breaking.
wondered what other peoples experience is of using HSBC insurance (ps, I rent so I don't have content insurance.. and no parents (students usually get told to use their parents home content insurance) (I'm 36 anyway, lol!)
Thanks for your help.
ps: has anyone tried asking HSBC if they will up their student offer - ie comparing the offers to other student accounts and seeing if they can get the same ie: if other banks are offering money etc?)Light bulb moment April 07: [strike]£3,655 [/strike] Oct 07: [strike]£2,220[/strike] now 0 - 3 years of Uni debt to be added at a later datenow at Uni as a Mature student -update: now has a First Class BA!0 -
Well I applied online for the Halifax student account and I was rejected like so many people, it seems. Basically told me to "get stuffed" and open a bloody Easycash account. I've read in this thread that you can progress from there onto a fully-fledged student account with the proper overdraft, but I don't think I can be bothered to try now. Shall I go to a branch and talk to a real person, or phone them up? Or just try the next best one in the comparison table at http://www.moneyfacts.co.uk/banking/bestbuys/banking_stud_accounts.aspx and forget about Halifax? I did have my reservations about opening an account with a bank with such an annoying marketing style, in the first place, but I'm not above making money from them...
I do wish the article would get updated already, though, it's the 9th August 2008 and still no change. I hope it happens in a couple of weeks -- it seems that most banks have released their new packages now! The Moneyfacts table is quite packed, but for some reason they refuse to let you sort the data by the amount of overdraft or anything else -- they hardly seem all that independent... Should NatWest be next on my list, or something else? The "NaziWest" comments put me off a bit, and I don't really need a railcard -- but I suppose it might come in handy...0 -
Yes I hope there is a new article soon.
I am not sure which one to go for. I will probably go Natwest for the free railcard (won't really use it though) and webcam.
Are you only allowed one student account? I use Nationwide for all my banking and don't intend to change. I will only get a student account for the freebies and possibly interest free overdraft.0 -
i really recommend the natwest student account. I have been using my railcard about every few months but as its free it still saves me money, they also post it to you every july so you dont even have to renew it. I also have an interest free overdraft which is so useful even though I could have managed without it. They are also very helpful in branch. You just have to have you loan paid into it and use your account at least once every 3 months, I usually transfer money into it or just do my food shop using the debit card. I also got a free webcam for applying online which was useful for talking to my parents on skype (for free)when I was away.0

My daughter is about to start a one year art foundation course, which is classed as further, not higher, education and does not qualify for a student loan.
I've been trying to find a student account that will accept her. I was hopeful of the Co-op but they said no, and from what I've read on here there's no point in trying HBOS as she has no credit history. Can't find any other possibilities.
In view of this, can anyone tell me what is the best bank account for her? She has only a savings account at the moment. (She is 18).
Many thanks.
