any idea when this article will be updated with current/new deals for 2008/2009 student bank accounts?
smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to.... ;)
  • Do you have to be a Uni student to get these accounts - I am a college student, does that count?

As long as it's a degree course (HND/HNC level or similar) then it's fine. I got my account with HBOS with no problems at all. :)

I've got an Abbey student account which I've had for a couple of years now, though at the time I got it -- I'd been with Abbey previously and just converted to the student account -- they didn't seem too keen on giving out student accounts. According to the branch manager too many people were defaulting on the overdrafts.

I don't know how it compares, but you get interest free overdraft going up to £1500 in your 3rd year of uni, and £1800 in your 4th. They're advertising it on the abbey website, but no free gifts or anything. :)

I'm generally happy with Abbey's service, though I also use Nationwide for going abroad.
  • I would not go near an Abbey account.. Their branch staff are only there to sell you things and if you ever have a problem you will get pushed around everywhere (including the lovely Indian call centres). When i worked there it seemed that nobody understood anything about student accounts either.. There were lots of problems with student overdrafts being set incorrectly and the branch staff were required to contact the underwriters to have it amended.

I've had mammoth problems in the past getting a student account anywhere - I've been with Natwest for 6 years but they've turned down my application for a student account 3 times - they don't give a reason except "we can't do it" and say I should check my credit report, I've done this and last year paid off the 2 defaults I had but even after this they still refused me??

    Any advice?

you get the card if you are a student.. .not based on age!

When are the account for 08-09 out?
  • Do you really need a student acc. I have an account with a £1350 O/D at the moment, its just a normal account that I pay my bills out of. I am in the O/D by quite a lot and wondered if due to this I would get a student one anyway.

I pay a small fee each month for my O/D which ensures the first £500 is interest free and the rest has a low interest.

So... Do i really need a student acc?

    Many thanks
