Before the internet - PanAm had a messaging noticeboard for travel agents to chit chat on using Prestel probably around 1985/86 .

Another on NSCA Mosaic here - And the homepage was whoever I downloaded it from (on a rip-snorting 2400-baud modem!). Probably CIX or Compuserve BBS.

I can't rightly remember but I know one of the first things I did when we got our first PC in 1998 - we didn't have a webcam and there was this site that said it would take a photo of you, so I spent 20 minutes tidying the room behind me. I brushed my hair. Pinched my cheeks. Sat and smiled at the screen, hit send, and waited for the photo to load. It took a while but the dial-up was pretty slow anyway. It slowly started to appear and I waited nervously to see my picture. Then I saw it. It was a monkey!

My OH still won't let me live that one down. :o:rotfl:

Not really the proper internet but we had a BBC computer with a modem that used a TV to show lists of information; it was called Prestel. Must have been the 1980s, possibly early 80s.

in '82 I had to link to a supercomputer in Rome to research sources for my planned postgraduate project. Our university library had to wait till a prearranged time when we could access it via satellite. I'd put in my search terms then there was a screeching while the printer printed out pages of sources in an endless sheet.

    An incredible palaver it was.
