It was whitehouse.gov in 1992 on a Solaris SparcStation using the NCSA Mosaic browser.

I was at a university open day and they were showing off their computer labs and suggested we visit it. The joke was that there was a !!!!!! site with a very similar name, so a lot of people in the room ended up with red faces!

I remember sending my first email soon after, using PINE. Ahh... those were the days when computers were simple! Ain't it pretty:

Some sort of air travel thing. Sabre or something that uses Sabre. Before Travelocity.
  • First I remember using was a search engine called Metacrawler (returned results from multiple search engines). Def used others prior but that's the first I actually remember by name/function.

digital.altavista.net I think it was - the goto search engine that was going to take over the world.

As above, that was on a Sun sparc running NCSA mosaic.

    Looked something like www.altavista.com

AltaVista was the search engine - before Google was invented. I remember going to a party and the host had the internet (impressive!) and showed off by downloading a picture of a naked girl (all very tasteful by today's standards) which took a tantalising hour, line by line, to come down the dial-up.
  • Not technically the web as it hadn't been invented but in around '88 had my first online experience with CIX. Been an official member for over 25 years now.
  • The Motley Fool. I'd bought a book and the website was recommended. This got me onto the web. Shortly after we went to America and I did loads of research using the internet. And made my first internet purchase - tickets to a Red Sox Game in Boston plus a tour around the stadium. This would have been around 1996 to 1997 (we visited May 1997).
