Christmas day is always the 25th, and boxing day is always the 26th.

    I agree.
    I can't see how it's confusing either.
If someone invited me for Boxing Day it would the 26th December regardless of what day of the week it was.

    Will it?

25th is a Friday- so the bank holiday is the Friday.
Tuesday is NOT a bank holiday - but a normal working day this year

It is this year but in 2016 Christmas Day 25th is a Sunday Boxing Day 26th is a Monday and Tuesday 27th will be the bank holiday associated with Christmas Day.

BTW its a leap year next year hence the jump in days

It's not that confusing. If it's a weekday, it's a bank holiday. If it's a sat or sun, the next working day is the bank holiday..

Not if the next working day is also a bank holiday in it's own right

This can also cause problems with e.g. parking restrictions that do not apply on public holidays.

This year, Saturday 26 December is not a public holiday so normal parking restrictions apply even if they would not normally apply on a public holiday.
    Not even wrong

By definition a bank holiday is not a working day. If Monday is a bank holiday the next working day is Tuesday.

I only wish everybody thought that. but from what I have found most people consider a working day to be Mon-Fri and a public holiday being a working day off rather than a non-working day

For as long as I've been alive 42 years, Boxing Day has always been the 26 th December so can't see the confusion!
I will lose 2 stone by this summer!!!!!!
  • It would never have occurred to me that there could be any mix up about when Boxing Day is! It is and always has been 26th December, and I'm pretty sure it's fell on a Saturday before now without anyone having to question it! :p

Actually.. if the 26th falls on a Sunday then it is not called Boxing Day because Sunday is for going to church so Monday 27th becomes Boxing day... it's ok to work then! BUT it is still St Stephens day.. that doesn't change.

If 26th is a Saturday then it is still called Boxing Day (My 2 diaries say so too) and Monday becomes the associated Bank Holiday.

if 25/26 are Sat/Sun then Monday and Tuesday are Bank Holidays and Monday 27th is called 'Boxing Day' ...

When the 26th Falls on a Sunday that is the ONLY time my birthday is not Boxing Day!

    Taken from a Wiki page..

Boxing Day is a secular holiday that is traditionally celebrated on 26 December, the day after Christmas. 26 December is also St. Stephen's Day, a religious holiday.[9][10][11] When 26 December falls on a Sunday, Boxing Day in many Commonwealth countries and former British dominions is moved to 27 December. In the UK, Boxing Day is a bank holiday. If Boxing Day falls on a Saturday, the following Monday is given as a substitute bank holiday. On the occasion when Christmas Day is on a Saturday and 26 December on a Sunday, the following Monday, 27 December, is the substitute bank holiday for Boxing Day and Tuesday, 28 December, the substitute bank holiday for Christmas Day.
