Don't make this "Boxing day" invitation miatake

Has everybody realised that Boxing Day this year is NOT actually the day after Christmas (ie Saturday) but officially on the following Monday 28th December which is a public holiday?

So if you have an invitation out for Boxing Day, or have invited friends or relatives for "Boxing Day". make sure you are both settling on the same day. I have just come across somebody who has just been saved from a potentially very embarrassing mistake by having this pointed out.

I think most people mean the day after Christmas day, but sensible to clarify!

Boxing day itself is the 26th December. It is a secular holiday and is fixed as the day after Christmas Day The public holiday that is normally associated with Boxing Day moves to the Monday if it falls on a weekend.

Boxing Day is the 26th December. The bank holiday associated with it can move (as can the Christmas Day bank holiday if the 25th is a sat or sun), but Boxing Day is always the 26th.

I agree Boxing Day doesn't change, just the holiday if it's on the weekend. Next year Christmas Day will be a Sunday with the holiday on the Monday but we won't call the monday Christmas Day.

And that's where it gets confusing because the 26th (Boxing Day) being a Monday is the public holiday belonging to Boxing Day. The public holiday associated with Christmas Day will be on Tuesday 27th

It's not that confusing. If it's a weekday, it's a bank holiday. If it's a sat or sun, the next working day is the bank holiday.

Christmas day is always the 25th, and boxing day is always the 26th.

It's not confusing.

Christmas Day is the 25th and Boxing Day the 26th.

If either of those dates falls on a weekend, a Bank Holiday will be given the following weekday, apart from years when 25th & 26th are both on a weekend, in which case the next 2 weekdays will be Bank Holidays.

No one really needs to bother about which day "belongs" to which holiday, surely??

I agree with the above ^^^ Boxing day is the 26th of December. If I asked someone around for midday on Boxing Day, I would expect them to come at midday on the 26th December, not the 28th. If I wanted them around on the 28th, I would say come on the Bank Holiday Monday the 28th.

As Torry said, next year Christmas is on a Sunday, with the Bank Holiday on the Monday, but we won't call the Monday Christmas day. The 25th is Christmas Day, and the 26th is Boxing Day. I don't think anyone can argue that point tbh.

Will it?

25th is a Friday- so the bank holiday is the Friday.
Tuesday is NOT a bank holiday - but a normal working day this year
