Thank you everyone for replying. To those of you who said I should have thought about all this before now, well I had and I was going to give all the children £20 each in a card, however, we were told at the weekend my husband is being made redundant. He isn't getting much redundancy, and I doubt we will be due any benefits, so I'm having to cut back. All my kids' presents are bought, so I have to cut back on everyone else's. Sorry I didn't say that in the originall post, my head is all over the place wondering how we will manage.0

I have stopped buying this year for my niece and nephew as we live so far away we do not see them very often. They are 18 and 22 and I have asked my sister not to buy for my two daughters who are grown up now and it seems ridiculous her splashing out on them when she does not know what they like. I think it has been a relief all round when I said lets stop buying gifts for each others' families and just stick to close family. Even if you do not do that this year I would definitely suggest in the future you do not buy for nieces, nephews etc etc when you are not close to them.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free Wannabe, Budgeting and Banking and Savings and Investment boards. In which case perhaps you should be saving where you can, if one of my siblings was being made redundant I would not expect any gifts. I hope he gets a new job soon.0 -

You have bigger things to worry about than how much to give to people you've never met.
Surely your family would understand your position if you were to 'only' give £10 to each child.
And if they still don't appreciate your position and the £10 doesn't go down too well, well.....they're not that much of a family imho.
Look to your own.
I hope your OH gets another job soon, maybe take a look at the DFW board, there's lots of great advice on reducing your out-goings on there.
Good luck.0 -
I have about 15 cousins (from 10 to 40 roughly). Gift limit is £10 and it stops when they leave education.
Think there is only about 5 of them left that still get something.0
