Refunds at an outlet store

Morning all.
My son purchased some clothing from an outlet store from quite a bit (and expensive!) brand. Within three weeks the cuff fastener dropped out (he still has both parts).
He has been told that due to the store being an outlet one where they take stock from their main stores and sell at discounted prices he will not be able to get a refund. He has been offered a swap of the item or a giftcard that can be used in any of their stores in the next 2 years.
I think he will just go for the swap to be honest, but can stores do that - just because its a discount store doesn't mean anything surely?
Thanks
M

Discount stores, whovever & whatever they are, are subject to the same consumer laws as all the rest of the retailers.
As far as I am aware he should be able to take the item & his receipt & get a full refund via the method he used to pay for the item.
Of course this is my opinion & could be wrong !!

You're not wrong. If this is a genuine fault then he should be be entitled to a refund, regardless whether it's an outlet store or not.
I would seek out a manager if I was him.0 -
It's just that they are trying it on. They want to keep the money within the company hence the gift card suggestion. You'll need to press you point firmly.0

It seems the son is happy to exchange, the OP just wants clarification of the law out of interest?0

I believe the retailer can choose whether to offer a repair, an exchange or a refund. It sounds like they choose an exchange.
NOTE: The law changed recently. If he bought very recently he may have stronger grounds.0 -
And the law is - from The Consumer Rights Act 2015 - the consumer has thirty days to confirm the goods conform to contract. Clearly they do not, so a full refund is due.
Could you please point out where I Said otherwise?
The OP has given the impression the son is happy to exchange, as many people are after a fault, not everyone wants a refund.0 -

Wealdrom simply clarified the legislation, as your earlier post asked for.0
