teaching all the people to read and write was a big mistake : once everyone can do it it loses the point
Your analogies are tiresome, few people can read or write properly without a spell checker, with grammar much less reassuring. The chip on your shoulder is the elephant in your room.0 -

Perhaps they ought to think about that before they move to London. But the answer is probably yes if they work in the City. In some careers, the argument is actually can they afford to not work in London. In many sectors, it does wonders for your career progression."Real knowledge is to know the extent of one's ignorance" - Confucius0 -

There appears to be no help to FTB buying a completely dilapidated property requiring a lot of work as per money constraints the BTL here appear to be retired looking for some future benefits etc??
I think you make an important point.
We live in a time when prices are rising and people are struggling to buy them. We also live in a time where DIY stores are closing and DIY is in decline. Thirty years ago, when I and many others faced a similar situation, we bought a structurally sound but run down property, moved in to save rent and spent a few years getting it up to a reasonable standard, sold it and bought a better one. These days most young people seem unwilling to get involved in DIY, they just want a new house or one that needs little work.
I have no idea why there is now a reluctance to put effort into restoring a cheaper property. I suspect it is partly a lack of manual skills, but in my day you did the things you were capable of doing to a house and got mates and relatives to help you with the things that you could not manage.
So much easier to blame BTLFew people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.0 -

There are plenty of cash rich property developers/BTL landlords who provide an easier sale to the vendors on these sorts of properties. Thats life but there isnt this reluctance as you suggest.
Last 12 or so properties viewed by myself and about 20 + couples and property developers/BTL landlords.
All went above asking price but to the cashbuyers who invariably have been investors.0 -

So you think the problem is cash buyers? Surely a BTL Landlord would prefer to buy a property that needs no work so that he can get on with generating rent? Maybe you should be looking for properties that BTL Landlords are not interested in? Not all properties are ideal and profitable for renting.Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. BTL landlords dont want to just generate rent. They want capital growth too.
I was stating your point about first time buyers not wanting to buy a house that needs renovating was wrong. I firmly believe that is the case. Do BTL landlords/property developers make it harder to buy for people in my positon. Yes they do. again most people will deal with that
That's something me and other first time buyers will have deal with and our look out. Whether i end up buying in a different area/different type of house that is a different issue
However, your reply sums up the attitude of BTL landlords and this is what causes resentment.0 -
