My son and I are on the waiting list in Dorset for council/social housing. We have recently been put up to Gold band dues to extreme mobility problems. How long do people wait? ....
And when you asked Dorset council what answer did they give??

Suppose it depends when the next suitable property comes available.
    Been away for a while.
  • Can't transport be provided to get your son to school if you have to move non local to get a house? I'd be looking into that. It might widen your options.

Good to know thanks. so We have a fairly small area as we need to be near my sons school that limits us a bit but I'm hopeful the right thing will come up. I'm not going to be fussy, anything in the area will be fine, I can get adaptations put in via a grant apparently so that's ok x

You're only limiting yourself. Which means you can expect a longer wait.

He can't get school transport as not entitled as I had to move him due to bullying, so he's not at the nearest school. Which was fine as we got the bus but now I've lost the use of my legs and I find everything so exhausting. Dcc gave me the how longs a piece of string answer, just depends what comes up x

At the moment there is nothing for us to bid on. I was just wondering how long people have been waiting and which area they are from. I'd be interested to know. J x

    Hi Jak.

I think you may as well ask how long is a piece of string, as it depends what becomes available.

Could be 2 weeks, 2 months, 6 months.

However, being in the GOLD band, I would think it would be sooner, rather than later.

I hope you get something soon and manage to settle and put down some roots. :)
    You didn't, did you? :rotfl::rotfl:

We changed schools as well, it is hard but consider broadening your horizons, you get 3 chances to turn down houses (well we did a few years ago), so if we were successful on a house we visited the local schools, dug around on the internet at the local area as quickly as possible, if its not suitable or the school doesn't feel right then turn the house down.

We had the choice between two, a four bed new build but very remote and not near a school, the other was 3 bed but next to a doctors, three schools and some really nice play areas, we went for the 3 bed.

Our kids settled into the new school easily, we looked at three local schools and only one felt right, and as it happened it was the best thing we ever did, the kids came on leaps and bounds and excelled compared to how they were doing at their old school.

We both drive and so to get to our families takes us 20 minutes, which is not too bad.

Be careful though if you are set on staying in the area, the slightest idea that you maybe willing to move means they will make you take something anywhere.

We wouldn't move back to our old home town now, moving here was the best thing we ever did.

Thanks. My son is actually happy for the first time so I just couldn't do that to him. He's asd and is finally having his needs met. The place we need to be is less competitive than the other because it's not the best area so hopefully we will be able to get somewhere. And New flats are being built opposite ds school and some will be housing association! Great excitement! But tbh if I wasn't so ill I'd move anywhere and just get the bus. I just really can't. I'm just not well enough xx
