Waiting for social Housing.

My son and I are on the waiting list in Dorset for council/social housing. We have recently been put up to Gold band dues to extreme mobility problems. How long do people wait? At the moment there is nothing for us to bid on. I was just wondering how long people have been waiting and which area they are from. I'd be interested to know. J x

We are currently in a flat but as I'm so poorly I can't shower or get about so I need somewhere that can be adapted as my place is too small for that.

  • It depends on the allocation policy of your local council or housing association. Every local authority has different criteria. I think that the need for housing, and therefore wait, is long wherever in the country. Good luck

    Apologies I wasn't being clear:

Are you renting privately? Are you in social housing already, but need to change? Do you own?

You might find that there are properties to rent privately which the LL has, or might be willing to allow, to be converted. (it can increase the value in certain areas)

It was a massive struggle to get 're banded tho. I met with first point who were able to help, I also had to ask for a reconsideration as they left us in bronze to start with. I've also got a little boy who has asd and sensory issues x

Have you considered looking for another private rental?

It may be quicker and the council would be willing to put up the deposit and work with you and the LL. It may be possible to secure a 24 month tenancy which would give you some breathing space and the council would be happy too.

  • In our case it was the next round of bidding after being put on the gold band, BUT we had a massively wide area we were willing to move to (Somerset, Devon and Dorset), and in the end moved about 20 miles from our home town, luckily I work from home so can be based anywhere.

Good to know thanks. We have a fairly small area as we need to be near my sons school so that limits us a bit but I'm hopeful the right thing will come up. I'm not going to be fussy, anything in the area will be fine, I can get adaptations put in via a grant apparently so that's ok x
