  • Couldn't be more right about that Colsten. It was actually me that had to tell my landlord friend about the changes the other week to stamp duty, he was completely unaware.
They seem to have much more of a "It'll never impact me" sort of attitude.

    If I were in your shoes, here are a few things I would do;

    - Fill up high interest bank accounts, Santander 123, Lloyds TSB classic acc., Nationwide flex, Tesco account, Club Lloyds etc
    - Fill up this years S&S ISA allowance, invest in a diversified portfolio of investment trusts and ETFs
    - Max out your pensions contributions for this tax year

    - In new tax year, max out S&S isa again.

can't speak for anyone else but I simplified the BTL thing too much, just thought, house rented, £500+ a month, asset is still there and later on in life hope it has gone up a fair bit in price. Simples

I think the media is partly responsible for this commonly held view, particularly some of the TV property pron shows.
In case you hadn't already worked it out - the entire global financial system is predicated on the assumption that you're an idiot:cool:

Fair point, I just wanted as many resources as possible to go through over the next few days/weeks/months. I didn't quite realise how much information there was on that Monevator website, that should be plenty to go through.

Thanks for all the help though!

BTL just were made to sound like such a good thing from friends who are plumbers and tradesmen. But at the end of the day, I don't have those skills and hadn't really factored in the missed rent/ vacant house that would really damage the yield.
Definitely agree with it being oversimplified by people.

BTL can be a good idea for plumbers and other tradesmen as they are in the business and know their trade (and others too) so can save money doing the work.

You have to pay someone to do most of it.

But perhaps your mates in the trade havent read up on the changes to BTL, and how they wont make as much on it in future.

I like the moneyvator site, do start there.

And stay away from t he guy on post 25.

Doesn't look at all dodgy - no not at all.................

I would suggest you don't PM him
Always rings alarm bells to me too. If this info is so relevant why not post it on the forum so it will help others and allow discussion. Keeping it private would suggest that someone doesn't want any feedback by others on it.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

Nothing dodgy with me my friend.

inviting people to PM you is against board rules. If you have something valuable to say on a discussion board then say it in public for all to benefit.

    Hot off the press:

    http://news.sky.com/story/1607374/house-prices-to-jump-50-percent-by-2025-report

    A little earlier:

    http://www.theguardian.com/money/2015/jun/11/uk-house-prices-rise-quarter-five-years

As climate change gathers pace, and England becomes greener and more pleasant, see what happens to the property prices.

At least that's what you are betting on: that England will not fall apart like Iraq and Syria, or just infested with pesky suicide bombers like Israel. Or property prices won't collapse like Greece, or Japan, or Spain.

I only buy on high ground, mind. It's climate change, it will flood.
Another reason is TV reception. This guy I know on the north side of a hill has no line of sight to the nearest terrestrial transmitter. Plus, he is so low down, he can't even get line of sight to the Sky satellite!

    Jim,

In all honesty I'm no expert and would not be comfortable giving advice to all.
On the other hand I want to be courteous to our broker and only pass on his details to suitable parties.

What I can state is our situation.

My wife finished her working life early and was looking forward to her pension when she reached the age of 61, a few years down the line.
Through a friend we were told that she may be able to receive it sooner as there were new parameters now available. At the time she was 58.
She wrote to her ex employer for her pension details and in all honesty the annual sum was relatively small.
Together and with my son's help we researched the Internet for information nd to our surprise found out that she could access her total pension pot and take 25% lump sum.

Fortuously, a family friend who had previously worked as an accountant for Shell Petroleum, put us on to his Broker who had assisted him with his frozen pension and investment.

His advice has made a huge difference to our circumstances.

    Best regards
    Jay

It sounds to me you had your wife cash in her final salary DB pension, so she could get her hands on 25% TFLS. And the rest too.

Very poor advice 90 times out of 100 from your friendly adviser (who got paid by doing it) and given she has a spouse and dependents probably 95 out of 100 wrong advice.

All the more reason to bypass using your recommendation.

How wrong you are my friend.
She received £25,000 and the balance is earning over 15% per year payable each and every month.
    Enough said!

    J

15%/year paid every month. That looks like a really good deal, better than playing about with bank accounts and shares. Please could you let us know what she is invested in. I rather fancy putting some of my money there. Is it guaranteed?

Nothing dodgy with me my friend.
I've pm'd the guy and left my phone number.
My wife had to retire early and the guy we found after a lot of searching was superb.
Just want to help if I can .

I hope RolandsB90 is smart enough not to respond to the offer as it sounds conspicuously like a boiler room scam, with the potential victim being groomed on an internet forum
