Thanks a lot for your advice! Having a mathematics degree I feel like getting to grips with stock market investments is more for me than property investment anyway. I just didn't want to pass up a good deal (if indeed there was one to be had). You make a very good point about the government cracking down on BTL investments, and this was something me and my brother have spoken about quite a lot.

I don't feel on our current incomes we will get quite the tax benefits other people would from pensions etc. but I'm sure they're a sensible investment.

Any other advice or links for stock market related investments would be great!

How many of the links posted for you have you started reading yet?
  • The first one on passive investment and the BBC article in the last post. Haven't watched the video posted by SuperScrooge yet though.

When I started reading Monevator, I spent days on it, and not to talk about ordering and reading one or two of the books they recommend. SuperScrooge's video is also ace. If you have finished with them within the hour, you are probably not cut out for making investments. May sound harsh but you shouldn't kid yourself.
  • You asked me what I had started reading, not what I had finished reading.. give me a chance! I'm willing to spend as much time as it takes, believe me. I've been given advice from people that I will be taking on board and researching for as long as possible. This is day 1, cut me some slack. I'm thankful for everyone helping out.
  • been some really good posts on here and helped me out a lot as well.

can't speak for anyone else but I simplified the BTL thing too much, just thought, house rented, £500+ a month, asset is still there and later on in life hope it has gone up a fair bit in price. Simples

till a few posts made me realise it aint quite that easy

fair enough. I was just wondering why you'd ask for "Any other advice or links for stock market related investments" when you had already been pointed at a massive amount of information.

Fair point, I just wanted as many resources as possible to go through over the next few days/weeks/months. I didn't quite realise how much information there was on that Monevator website, that should be plenty to go through.

Thanks for all the help though!

BTL just were made to sound like such a good thing from friends who are plumbers and tradesmen. But at the end of the day, I don't have those skills and hadn't really factored in the missed rent/ vacant house that would really damage the yield.
Definitely agree with it being oversimplified by people.

When we do split and live separately we will probably just get 2 places with the money we get from the 1 we own now.
Getting 2 places for the price of 1 suggests that the 2 will be much smaller than the 1. Given that a probable reason for splitting would be finding someone else you want to live with, would moving into a smaller place be what you want to do?

One of the reasons they'd talk up BTL could be that it's landlords that they make a lot of their money from.....

Another, and probably more likely one, one is that they haven't quite caught up with the changes that are happening to the BTL market as we speak. Only today, a 3% levy was announced for second homes in Scotland. This follows the earlier stamp duty announcement for England and Wales, as well as Mark Carney's announcement "to take action".
