I also received the email, and wasn't sure what to do.

Have used Live Mail for ages, and it works very well. Don't really want to change to another email client. If it ain't broke, why fix it?

Will see what the general consensus is before deciding what to do.

I also plan to try Thunderbird - although the import of contacts looks a little convoluted, not sure about the 'bug' perhaps this will help?

The tricky bit is getting the contacts out of WM rather than getting them into Thunderbird, so you may have the same issue regardless of what client you move to.

If you are talking about Outlook.com, you can export the contacts csv file from 'People' to your desktop, then import into TB as you do with any other address book.
Apologies if I've got the wrong end of the stick...

  • Will this affect the Email app, on Android?

No, its getting the contacts out of Windows Live Mail into Thunderbird is the big problem.
Even following the guides from Thunderbird help does not really work.
You can export contacts to Thuderbird but when you look at your contacts all the information is in the wrong fields !!
It appears that the only way is to go through all the contacts & corrct the errors...........
    P.S.
I exported them as a .vcf file

This may be of interest for those still on the 2011 version of Windows Live Mail as I was.

I took the plunge this morning and downloaded the Live Essentials installer from Microsoft ... http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/essentials.

Set this running (you need to be online) and a window comes up informing you that it will update any Live Essentials already installed, which it did quite slowly on my old Win7 desktop.

It overwrote the old version of Live Mail perfectly whilst retaining all settings, accounts, messages, calendar entries and contacts (losing these had been my main worry). Apart from the startup splash screen now saying Windows Live Mail 2012, you wouldn't know anything had happened. I've checked to see if there were any Windows Updates waiting for it but so far none.

Once updated, those of you with Microsoft based email accounts (according to Microsoft) only need to manually download Windows Update KB3093594 to apparently be fully compliant again. I don't need to, so I haven't tried this bit myself so I hope it works for you.
