The options to 'require a password' or 'not require a password' are greyed out.
Do I need to set a password first before I can choose the 'not' option ?

oh and i forgot this point. Windows seems to be moving settings deeper and deeper into layers.

Shut down was a 2 click operation, now its start >power > shutown

On windows explorer you could just enable preview pane by clicking on the toggle button on the top nav bar. Noiw you have to click view to get to see the option to enable/disable it.

This started off in office around 4 years ago, they decided to changed the dropdown menu for toolbar buttons, except they cant fit everything into toolbar buttons so it's all a big confusing blob of mess.

Opening/saving files use to be a 2 step process. Click open/save and then enter location and file name. But now they've introduced an intermedia step where you have to choose whether to save/load from the computer or cloud etc. So annoyingl

If you pin the power button to the Task bar, Shut down is a single click.

Microsoft certainly seem to be very fond of changing stuff for changes sake.

The GUIs from XP thru 7 were in the main OK but I felt that Win 8 was a massive retrograde step which they are slowly reversing and still haven't got there yet. The new stuff where "settings" takes on some but not all of the control panel is another screw up which they will probably make worse as "settings" takes on more - just what was wrong with control panel?

If they continue trying to get some leverage for their pretty much failed mobile product by forcing it down the throats of everybody using desktops and laptops I think they are more likely to alienate those customers than get them to see the error of their ways in rejecting windows mobile by choosing Android and IOS instead.

Instead of messing with workable GUIs they should have been fixing bugs, vulnerabilities, and bloat. Certainly I don't see anything they've done as advantageous and when some new feature (eg that pointless aerosnap that came in a while back) appears it usually annoys me and I find out how to turn it off.

The Control panel is set to be replaced completely by settings in the future.
The OS is not made purely for you (however much we would all like to think they should ;)), so, MS have put in features that you may consider annoying but others use.
They are making most of their apps available on Android and IOS, so, rather than alienating anyone they are actually facilitating integration through many platforms.

I am pretty underwhelmed by Windows 10.

The user interface is not as pleasant as Windows 7, and doing things seems to require more actions (ie. the shutdown "layers" noted above). The flat style is as dull as ditchwater and the schizophrenia still persists from Windows 8: why have settings and control panel?, why are the default apps inconsistent, with some being true desktop apps and others being the "Metro" style.

And what the heck is "Edge"? From my perspective, it's a tool you can use to download Firefox.

And of course, there are all of the well-published data harvesting features, where Microsoft have decided they need to collect your information.

All in all, I'm upgrading Windows 8 to 10, but no plans to change any Windows 7 machines anytime soon.

Aside from boot time (which is pretty incidental really, if you've got an SSD), I can't think of a single thing which Windows 10 does better than Windows 7.

I can't think of many it does as well. It does get to user login and presents a desktop quicker, which as you say is pretty irrelevant, but there is still one hell of a lot of work going on after that point.

At least the metro apps are capable of running as windows now but what genius ever thought it was a good idea for them to overlay the entire desktop in their original form. Still things are steadily improving - ie reverting closer to what they were originally or behaving far more normally rather than "modern". I'm hoping 10.2 is going to introduce a proper start menu with the option to junk all those pointless tiles.

Ive been running Windows 10 since it was first launched. I mentioned to my son this evening that i wished i'd stuck with Windows 7. Ive suddenly come to the conclusion i hate it.

    Edge just freezes on me.
