Just checking my replies and will clarify a few things :-)
I haven't made a decision yet as I AM a woman ( and yes my husband is a man)
It is definitely a laptop with Windows that I have been asked for.
Thinking of going down the easy route and getting it with 8.1 already installed by them.. ( then if anything isn't right it's not my fault)

Last time I looked, it was about £65 for a copy of Windows. So long as the relevant drivers are available for the OS, you should be fine. Just boot from the DVD and it guides you through the installation.
its possible to buy copies of windows for $30 if you know where to look. It's not pirated but meant for system builders. Basically when ASUS make a laptop and sell it for £300. How much do they give to MS for windows,. Not £65 that's for sure. MS might sell 30,000 licenses to ASUS for $20 each, and these end up in the grey market being sold very cheap.
I've purchased windows 10 for $30 and office 2014 for $250
